Orchestra performs Nov. 17

Rob Taylor '82 will be the
featured artist in a concert by the Union
College and Community Orchestra,
conducted by Victor Klimash, on Sunday, Nov. 17, at 3 p.m. in Memorial Chapel.

The concert is free and open to
the public.

Taylor
will play the solo violin part in Chausson's Poeme pour Violon et Orchestre
and also Dvorak's Romance. The program also includes the Overture to
The Secret Marriage
by Cimarosa, and the Romeo and Juliet Fantasie
Overture
by Tchaikovsky. Taylor
joins the Orchestra taking a leave from his position as concertmaster of the
world tour of Disney's The Lion King.

Jazz concert is Nov. 20

The Union College Jazz Ensemble and the Tim Olsen Band will perform on
Wednesday, Nov. 20, at 8 p.m. in the
Reamer Campus Center Auditorium. Admission is free.

Led by
Professor Tim Olsen, the Union College
Jazz Ensemble is comprised of Union College students and musicians from the Capital District. The
group performs music spanning the history of jazz as well as original
compositions and arrangements, and has appeared throughout New York and New
England. In May 2002 the group
released its first CD, “Live!”, comprised of concert
performances recorded over a six-year period. This concert will feature area
saxophonist Eric Walentowicz in Theme for Ernie, One O'Clock Jump,
and Walentowicz's own Jam 'n' Spice.

After
intermission, the Tim Olsen Band
will take the stage for a set that will mix challenging classics by Pat
Metheny, Tom Harrell, and Bud Powell with original works by Tim Olsen and Eric
Walentowicz. The band is made up of Tim Olsen, trumpet/piano, Eric Walentowicz,
saxes/flute, Cary DeNigris, guitar, Pete Toigo, bass, and Pete Sweeney, drums.

Gloria Taylor-Neal presents at higher education conference

Gloria Taylor-Neal, director of  the Academic Opportunity Program/HEOP, presented
a workshop at the recent Higher Education Opportunity Program Professional
Organization (HEOPPO) conference in East Elmhurst,
N.Y. Her presentation was titled “Recruitment
and Retention in HEOP and Other Opportunity Programs.” She was elected to serve
as vice president for HEOPPO through 2004.

Hamm-Ehsani presents paper

Karin Hamm-Ehsani, assistant
professor of German, presented a paper, “Divided Screen, Divided
City: Border Crossings in Run Lola Run” at the Literature and Film
Conference 2002: Global and American Cinemas Conference, at Dickinson
College.
