Dutchwomen Cagers See Their Undefeated Streak

Posted on Jan 15, 2003

The 2002-03 undefeated Dutchwomen

The women's basketball team remains undefeated after Tuesday night's
69-58 victory at Skidmore. Not only did the win improve
Union's record to 10-0, it gave the Garnet a 1-0 record in the
Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association. The Dutchwomen
are one of only 14 undefeated teams in the country as of today
in Division III and one of only three in New York State teams
with unblemished records, the University of Rochester and
St. John Fisher are the other two.

Head coach Mary Ellen Burt and her squad will be severely
challenged on Friday (at 8 p.m.) when they travel to
meet league and area rival Rensselaer. The Red
Hawks hold a 32-8 all-time series advantage over the
Dutchwomen are are 18-4 against Union in Troy.
What's more, Rensselaer has won 12 of the last 13
meetings against Union and has seven consecutive home
victories over the Dutchwomen. Union's last
victory over RPI came in Memorial Field House in 1996,
65-57.

“We have our work cut out
for us, no doubt,” said Burt.

The Dutchwomen are
averaging 27.5 points a game off of the total 290
turnovers their defense has caused. Union is also
averaging 38 points a game in the paint and 30 points a
game from players off of the bench (non-starters).
On the other side of that coin, the Garnet is giving up
an average of 12.6 points a game off of the 208
turnovers it has committed and is allowing 18 points a
game in the paint and 14.5 points a game from the
opposition's bench.

Union's 10 wins thus far
already tops all but nine of the previous 27 teams for
victories in a season.

Saturday the Dutchwomen
return to UCAA action when they travel to meet Vassar at
4 p.m.

PHIL HENRY UCAA “Guard
of the Week”

Senior guard Phil Henry (Flushing, NY/Chaminade) was
named the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association's
“Guard of the Week” after helping the Dutchmen
win the 19th annual Sig Makofski/Union College
Basketball Invitational last weekend. Henry, who
named the event's Most Valuable Player, scored a
game-high 23 points as Union beat St. Joseph's of Maine,
80-62 in the championship. The Monks had gone into
the game with a 10-2 record. Besides his 23
points, Henry handed out five assists, came up with
three steals and pulled down four rebounds.

In the opener, Henry helped the
Dutchmen snap a three-game losing streak with a
game-high 19 points as Union defeated SUNY Maritime,
76-40. Henry added an assist, two

percent field goal average.

Profiling Senior Swim Captain Ridgley Harrison

Posted on Jan 15, 2003

Ridgley Harrison

It is hard to believe that Ridgley Harrison is a
senior. It seems like almost yesterday that the
outgoing freshman with a wild head of hair walked into
the locker rooms of the swim and crew teams.
Harrison, a native of Hackettstown, New Jersey, and a
graduate of Morristown-Beard High, did in fact
“walk-on” to the Dutchmen's roster.

“Ridgley was not a recruited
swimmer,” said second-year head coach Scott
Felix. “If fact, the only swimming experience
he had prior to Union was that he was a lake swimmer in
a summer swimming program.”

Voted the Dutchmen's Most
Valuable Performer as a sophomore, Harrision, the
non-recruited swimmer with little competitive
experience, won the New York State championships in the
50 and 100 freestyle events and was a member of Union's
state-champion 800 freestyle relay team. He
qualified for nationals in the 50 and was a member of
the the Dutchman 400 and 800 relay teams that
participated in the NCAA meet.

His sophomore season again saw
him earn his team's Most Valuable Performer award after
he won state championships in the 100 and 200 freestyle
races with a fourth-place finish in the 50 free.
He scored in all three of his freestyle
events, finishing tied for 12th in the 50 (21.13), 11th in the
200 (1:41.25), and 13th in the 100 (46.38) qualifying him as an
honorable mention All-American in all three. His efforts
on the relay teams helped the 800 team finish ninth with a time
of 6:52.72, the 400 team finish 11th with a time of 3:07.44, and
the 200 team 16th with a time of 1:26.77. All three relays
earned honorable mention All-American honors as the Dutchmen
moved from 38th in the 2001 NCAA Meet (with 16 points) to 21st
in 2002 season with 45.6 points.

Harrison has been named the UCAA
Championship Meet's “Swimmer of the Meet” each of the
last two seasons. Last year he won three events in record
time (the 50 free in 21.15, the 100 free in 47.47 and the 200
free in 1:44.49) and this season he again won all
three of his freestyle races and helped the relay teams capture
a pair of titles. He was also chosen as Union's
Outstanding Male Sophomore by a vote of the College's coaching
staff.

“Ridgley is one of the hardest
workers and best leaders that I've had the pleasure of
coaching,” said Felix, who had been the interim head coach
at West Point prior to coming to Union and had been the Black
Knights' assistant since 1998 (he was also an assistant at
Army during the 1993-94 season, an assistant at Springfield from
1994 through 1996 and head coach at West Virginia Wesleyan from
1996 through 1998). “Ridgley has been the backbone of our
program this season,” Felix continued. “We count
on him time and time again and he steps up and performs.”

Currently 15th in the country in the 50
freestyle and 22nd in the 200 freestyle, Harrison has won all of
his races this year except one. He finished second in the
500 freestyle by two one-hundredths of a second in the meet
against Williams.

“At this time Ridgley is not sure
what he want to pursue after graduation,” said Felix.
“But whatever it is, he will enjoy success.”

Seana Phillips
Aaron D'Addario

Junior captain Seana Phillips (Cape Elizabeth, ME/Cape
Elizabeth)
and senior captain Aaron D'Addario
(Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius)
both earned
Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association “Swimmer of
the Meet” honors for their performances against
Hartwick last Saturday. It marked the second and
third time this year that a Union swimmer has been
selected. Senior co-captain Ridgley Harrison
(Hackettstown, NJ/Morristown)
was voted the Upstate
Collegiate Athletic Association's “Swimmer of the
Meet” after winning all three of his freestyle
races and helping the relay teams capture a pair of
titles in the annual UCAA Championship Meet that was
held at the University of Rochester the weekend of
December 6-7). Harrison's efforts helped the
Dutchmen capture second behind Hamilton.

Phillips, who is majoring in
education with an eye toward becoming a teacher, won
the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle races against Hartwick and
also helped the 200 freestyle relay team capture first
place. Phillips won the 50 free in 25.97 and the 100 free
in 58.15. She swam the anchor leg of the 200 free
relay in 26.30.

“Seana had two great in season
swims and was a key to our victory in the 200 freestyle
relay,” said second-year head coach Scott Felix.
“She was very aggressive in her races and raised the bar
for our entire team.”

D'Addairo, who has a dual major
of psychology and biology, continued his strong season
with victories in the one meter (scoring 231.20 points) and
three meter boards (252.75 points). His efforts helped the
Dutchmen improve their dual meet record to 2-1 with a 128-106
victory over the visiting Hawks. His two wins picked up 18
points for the Ductchmen.

“Aaron had one of the best dual
meet competitions in his career,” said Felix.
“He was instrumental in our team's win over a very tough
Hartwick squad.”

The teams travel to take on Ithaca this
weekend at 1 p.m. before returning home for meets against
Rensselaer on Tuesday, January 22 (at 4:00 p.m.) and Middlebury
on Saturday, January 25 at 2 p.m.

Instant Replay: Men’s Ice Hockey vs. Harvard (1/4/2003)

Posted on Jan 8, 2003

Although it was a much
closer game than the November loss to the Crimson, the Union Dutchmen could not
pull off a win on January 4 and fell to Harvard 3-1. Outstanding goaltending on
both ends of the ice was the story of the game, with Dov
Grumet-Morris claiming the win with 29 saves.

Both teams were
scoreless through the first period and into the second until Tom Cavanagh scored at the conclusion of a Harvard penalty.
Brett Nowak made it a two-goal game with only one second remaining in the
period.

Dominic Moore scored at 7:31 of the third to put the Crimson up by three with Tim Pettit
getting his second assist of the night. Union's Glenn Sanders got Union on the board at 15:25 with a penalty shot, taken after Harvard's Noah Welch was
assessed a hooking penalty. Sanders' goal was his first of the season as well
as Union's first successful penalty shot in its Division I history.
Prior to the goal, Sanders had three assists in 17 games played.

Union pulled goalie Kris Mayotte late in the third but was unable to score with the
man-advantage. Mayotte made 28 saves for Union while Grumet-Morris made 29.

Despite the 3-1 loss, Union played a much more
disciplined game than in the earlier contest, taking 14 penalty minutes instead
of the 58 assessed in their previous meeting with the Crimson. The penalty
killing improved, sitting at 80% vs. Harvard compared to the 62.5% in their
most recent games vs. Minnesota – Duluth. For the first time
since their December 8 win vs. Iona, the Dutchmen put 30 shots on goal. They
had averaged 22 shots on goal in the previous three games.
