John Cagianello Captures UCAA Weekly Rookie Honor

Posted on Jan 29, 2003

Freshman
John Cagianello

Freshman guard John Cagianello (Wethersfield, CT/Wethersfield) had quite a week as the Dutchmen won two of three games, including both UCAA showdowns. Prior to last week's three games vs. Middlebury, Hamilton and Hobart, Cagianello had scored 132 points in 12 games (11.0 average) and had connected on 16-of-45 three-point field goals (35.5).

Last week Cagianello produced the following numbers:

Middlebury 7-15 field goals, 3-8 three-point field goals, 7-9 free throws, 24 points
Hamilton 9-11 field goals, 7-8 three-point field goals, 6-6 free throws, 31 points
Hobart 9-16 field goals, 3-6 three-point field goals, 0-0 free throws, 21 points
Totals 25-42 field goals, 13-22 three-point field goals, 13-15 free throws 76 points
59.5% 59.1% 86.6% 25.3 average

Now, after 15 games, the 6'0, political science major has scored 208 points, is 29-of 67 in three-point field goals (43.3), and moved from third to first on Union's scoring chart with an average of 13.9.

John Cagianello (32) watches as the ball falls through the hoop for two of the freshman's 31 points against Hamilton. Cagianello scored 76 points in three games last week to take over the Dutchmen's team scoring leadership and earn the UCAA “Rookie of th

His performances earned him the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association's “Rookie of the Week” honor.

“When we recruited John we thought he would be a good college scorer,” said seventh-year head coach Bob Montana. “Earlier in the season, based on the number of minutes he had been playing (off the bench), he was contributing his share of points. Now that he has been starting (since the Union Invitational) and is averaging 25 minutes a game, his point production has increased.”

In the first seven games of the season, in which the Dutchmen went 3-4, Cagianello came off the bench to average 8.7 points in 16.1 minutes. Cagianello has started each of the last eight games since the Union Invitational on January 10 and is averaging 31.1 minutes and scoring 18.4 a game. The Dutchmen are 6-2, including 4-1 in the UCAA where they hold a one-half game lead over Hamilton and Hobart.

“We knew that John was a good shooter,” Montana continued. “He is a player who can put the ball on the floor and score or catch a pass and score. That is a rare combination for a Division III player. Usually at this level guys can do one or the other; John can do both.”

The Dutchmen are on the road the next two weeks, traveling to the North Country this weekend and then to Hobart and Hamilton on February 7 & 8. Union closes out the regular season with a six-game homestand from February 11 through the 22nd.

Mayotte, Beal Earn Weekly ECAC Hockey Awards

Posted on Jan 29, 2003

Freshman Kris Mayotte
Earns His Second ECAC
“Goalie of the Week” Award

Last weekend's sweep of Dartmouth and Vermont was particularly satisfying for the Dutchmen. Not only did the dual victories move Union into a fourth-place tie (with Yale) for the final first-round playoff bye position, it marked the first time in the Dutchmen's 12-year Division I history that they were able to post back-to-back road victories over the Big Green and Catamounts. Certainly worth noting is the fact that Union's first-ever ECAC Division I league game was played at Vermont's Gutterson Field House, were the Cats captured a hard-fought 3-1 decision on November 9, 1991. Union, which lost its first 10 Gutterson decisions, has now won two-straight in the Catamount's barn.

“It was a big weekend for us,” said head coach Kevin Sneddon. “Looking back at history I'd have to say it is more of a tribute to Dartmouth and Vermont as to how tough they are in their home rinks. For us to go up there and pull away with four points, certainly that is a great confidence boost to a young team.”

Sneddon, who, along with assistant coaches Andrew Will and Greg Klym, has the Dutchmen right in the middle of the playoff hunt with their 6-5-2 ECAC record (10-11-4 overall), feels that the two types of victories proved that his young team has learned some valuable lessons so far this year.

“It was a good weekend in that we had to play with the lead against Dartmouth (a 2-0 victory in which the Dutchmen scored a goal in each of the first two periods), and then had to come-from-behind against Vermont (a game in which Union trailed 2-0
before scoring the game's final four goals). Our success in these two different types of games will give us confidence for both situations as we head down the stretch.”

Sophomore Joel Beal
Is ECAC's Overall
Assist Leader

Not only did the team and its fans take notice of last weekend's accomplishments, the ECAC recognized freshman goaltender Kris Mayotte (Finleyville, PA) and sophomore forward Joel Beal (Brantford, Ont.) for their efforts in the sweep. Mayotte earned his second “Goalie of the Week” award while Beal was a member of the league's weekly “Honor Roll” for the second time this season.

Mayotte was in net for both Union wins, raising his record to 8-5-2 overall and 5-3-1 in conference. He finished with a .964 save percentage, stopping 31 shots against Dartmouth for his second shutout this year, and kicking out 23 shots against Vermont. Mayotte has allowed only three goals in the last 10 periods in net (0.90 GAA, .963 sv%) and has been in goal during the Dutchmen's recent three-game win streak. Heading into this weekend's games at Clarkson (Friday night) and St. Lawrence, Mayotte is fourth in the ECAC's overall statistics in both goals against average (2.50) and save percentage (.919). Against league competition, Mayotte is sixth with his 2.53 GAA and fifth with his .910 save percentage.

“Kris has done a great job for us, thoughout the entire year,” said Sneddon. ” He has really picked up his play since January. For a freshman Kris plays with a lot of maturity,” Sneddon continued. “He never rests on his successes and is always looks a head to see what he needs to do to prepare for the upcoming game. Kris has certainly demonstrated focus and mental toughness far beyond a typical freshman.”

Beal eclipsed last season's leading scorer for Union on Friday night, adding two assists to his 26 point total. He also assisted on Union's game-winner on Saturday, bringing his season total to 29 (6-23-29). Not only is he Union's leader with assists and points he leads the entire ECAC with his overall assist per game average of 0.92. Tied for first in the league's overall scoring race, Beal's 12 league points puts him in 21st position while his nine ECAC assists leaves him in the No. 16 spot. He has five assists in the last three games.

‘La Fenice’ to perform Jan. 26

Posted on Jan 24, 2003

“La Fenice”

“La Fenice” (The Phoenix) will
perform selected works by Haydn, Bach, Dvorak and Lerdahl on Sunday, Jan. 26, at
3 p.m. in Union
College's Memorial Chapel.

The concert, the debut of the
ensemble, is part of the College's chamber music series.

The program includes Haydn's Quartet in D-minor, Op. 42 for oboe,
violin, viola, and cello; a Bach chorale prelude, Schmücke Dich; and the Dvorak Quartet
in E flat-major, Op.
87. Featured
will be the world premiere of an oboe quartet by Fred Lerdahl (also the first
world premiere hosted by the Series). The composer will preface his work with
commentary.

La Fenice was formed in the wake
of the September 11 attacks. The symbolism of the phoenix rising reborn from
the ashes to reaffirm the immortality of beauty and the arts was the group's
inspiration for its creation.

Although brand new, the all-female
group is comprised of veteran chamber music performers. Violinist Catherine Cho
performed twice previously in the series – once with Musicians from Marlboro
and once with Todd Palmer and Friends. Cellist Marcy Rosen performed several
times in the series with Musicians from Marlboro. Pianist Diane Walsh, oboist
Peggy Pearson, and violist Maria Lambros are new to the series.

Tickets, at $20 ($8 for students),
are available at the door. For more information, call (518) 372-3651.
