Hockey News: ECAC Weekend Summary

Posted on Jan 22, 2003

Cornell And Yale Enjoy Weekend Sweeps.
Brown, St. Lawrence And Vermont Among Winners.

No. 4 Cornell and Yale completed important sweeps on the road over the
weekend.

The Big Red played conference games in the Capital Region against Union
and Rensselaer. Against the Dutchmen at Achilles Rink, Cornell used size to its
advantage in downing Union 6-0. Junior Ryan Vesce scored two goals and added
an assist while David LeNeveu stopped 17 shots for his fourth shutout of the
season.

Things were a little tougher Saturday night against RPI. Down 1-0 after the
first period, Stephan Bâby scored two goals and an assist in a three-goal second
period for the Big Red. Cornell held on in the third for the 3-2 win. Cornell is
now in second place, just four points back of Harvard with four games in hand.
Yale defeated Notre Dame, 4-1 and 3-1, in a two-game non-conference set.
After traveling to South Bend, Indiana for Friday's game, the two teams went to
the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois for Saturday's clash. Freshman goaltender
Josh Gartner picked up the win in both games, stopping 59 of 61 Irish shots in
the process. It was Yale's first-ever sweep of a
CCHA team.

Travel partners were paired up against one another at Clarkson and
Dartmouth. It was the road team that would come away with the win in each
game, however.

St. Lawrence completed its first sweep of North Country neighbor Clarkson
since 1991-92 with a 3-2 win in front of a record crowd of 4,125 at Cheel
Arena. The Saints were in the driver seat after Jim Lorentz scored on a shorthanded
breakaway to put the visitors up 3-1 at 11:16 of the third period. Sophomore
Chris Bright made things interesting down the stretch, scoring off a faceoff
with just under four minutes to play to cut the lead to one. Sophomore goaltender
Kevin Ackley held off a furious attack in the closing moments to preserve the
win for St. Lawrence.

A five-goal Catamount rally inside a span of 4:50 was enough to erase a 3-
0 Dartmouth lead, and end the Big Green's 10-game home winning streak, as
Vermont won 6-4 at Thompson Arena. Bryson Busniuk and Tim Plant each
scored two goals for Vermont. Sophomore Lee Stempniak had a goal and two
assists for Dartmouth.

In other Capital Region action, Colgate shutout Rensselaer, 3-0, Friday
night behind a 28-save performance by junior David Cann. Union bounced
back on Saturday night to down Colgate 4-1. Captain Nathan Gillies scored
twice while Jordan Webb added a goal and two assists for the Dutchmen.

In non-conference action, Dartmouth skated to a 1-1 tie with No. 5 New
Hampshire at the Verizon Wireless Arena in Manchester, New Hampshire. Sophomore
Dan Yacey made 34 saves in his first start of the season for the Big Green.

Brown used four power-play goals, while killing all three Crusader power
plays, as the Bears defeated Holy Cross, 4-2, at Meehan Auditorium on Saturday.
Les Haggett and Brent Robinson each tallied a goal and two assists in the
victory.

Jordan Webb (Nepean, Ontario) led the Dutchmen with three
points in Saturday's win (1-2-3). Webb is first among his
teammates with ECAC points (5-5-10) and is second overall
(12-11-23). His power play goal was the sixth of the season
for the winger, which also leads the Dutchmen and ended a
113:12 second scoreless draught for Union.

Kris Mayotte (Finleyville, Pennsylvania) turned away 15 of
16 Colgate shots on Saturday, earning his first win in six starts.
Mayotte's record is now at .500 in conference games (3-3-1)
and is one game over .500 overall with a 6-5-1 record. He
also held Cornell scoreless (8 saves) in the third period on
Friday night in relief of Tim Roth. Mayotte's 2.72 GAA and
.913 sv% leads the team.

Nathan Gillies (Cambridge, Ontario) took home two goals
on Saturday and is now in a tie for second on the team with
goals scored (10). Gillies scored Union's third goal on a
breakaway and capped the scoring with just 1.7 seconds left
in regulation with an empty-netter. His 20 points overall is
good enough for third on the team while his nine ECAC points
puts him in a tie for second. Saturday's goals broke a fourgame
scoreless streak for Gillies.

Joel Beal (Brantford, Ontario) had his team-leading eighth
multiple-point game on Saturday, assisting on two goals. Beal
leads the Dutchmen with assists (20) and points (26), and is
in a tie for second in ECAC scoring (3-6-9). He averages
1.13 points/gm.

Glenn Sanders (Saugus, Massachusetts) tallied Union's
gamewinner on Saturday, the first of his career. Sanders' goal
was his second of the season, both coming in the last four
games. The junior center has five points overall.
The A.J. Palkovich – Glenn Sanders – Max Seel line recorded
three points on Saturday, and more importantly was matched
up with Colgate's top line of Scooter Smith – Kyle Doyle –
Adam Mitchell. That line was kept scoreless in the game.

Hockey News: Instant Replay – Union College Vs. Cornell, Colgate (1/17-18/2003)

Posted on Jan 22, 2003

Cam
Abbott's goal
just 1:56 into
the game was
all the Big
Red needed as
they held the
Dutchmen
scoreless
through 60 minutes and shutout
Union 6-0.

Matt Moulson made it a two-goal
game under two minutes later, his goal
assisted by Travis Bell. Shawn
Palahicky closed out the first period
scoring at 11:34 from Daniel
Pegoraro. The Dutchmen were
outshot 15-6 in the opening period.

Cornell added three additional
goals in the second. Ryan Vesce had
an even-strength goal and a power play
tally at 1:06 and 12:29 respectively.
Sam Paolini ended the scoring at
18:51. Union again managed six shots
on goal in the period with Cornell
doubling that.

Tim Roth was pulled at the end
of the second in favor of Kris Mayotte.
Roth made 21 saves on 27 shots
through two periods. Mayotte held
Cornell scoreless on eight shots in the
third. Dave LeNeveu made 17 saves
in the game for the shutout.

Union was 0-3 on the power play
while Cornell was 1-2.

After the
previous night's
6-0 shutout, the
Du t c h m e n
came out with a
vengeance Saturday
night and
beat Colgate by
a score of 4-1. Union took home one
goal in the second and three goals in
the third, including two by captain
Nathan Gillies, for the win. With the
win, Union is 7-11-4 overall and 3-5-
2 in the ECAC. The Dutchmen sit
in a tie with Dartmouth for sixth place
in conference standings with 10 points.

Jordan Webb scored Union's first
goal of the game, and his first since
December 29, at 3:00 of the second
while on the power play. Joel Beal took
a pass from Scott Seney and had the
initial shot from the blueline. Webb
redirected Beal's shot past Colgate's
David Cann for his 12th goal of the season.
Shots were 19 to nine in favor of
the Dutchmen through two periods.

Dutchman Glenn Sanders made it
a two-goal game with his even-strength
goal at 2:42 of the third. Max Seel took
advantage of a miscue by Colgate's defense
and fed the puck to freshman A.J.
Palkovich. Palkovich's shot was saved
by Cann, but Sanders netted the rebound
for his second goal of the season.

Colgate came within one at 8:57
of the third thanks to a power play goal
by P.J. Yedon, assisted by Joey Mormina
and Kyle Wilson. But Union captain
Nathan Gillies regained the two-goal
lead at 9:30 of the third with his ninth
goal of the season. Bryan Campbell
and Webb assisted on the breakaway
goal. Gillies ended the scoring with
just one second remaining in regulation,
adding his first empty-netter of
the season.

David Cann made 25 saves in the
game on 28 shots. Union goalie Kris
Mayotte made 15 saves on 16 shots for
his first win in six games. Mayotte is
now 6-5-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the
ECAC

Hockey News: Crucial Weekend On Tap For Union

Posted on Jan 22, 2003

Halfway through the 2002-03 ECAC regular season schedule, the Dutchmen
are in a tie for sixth place with 10 points. Traditionally the conference race is a tight
one just as it is this season, with four points in either direction landing the Dutchmen
as high as fourth or as low as 11th. Needless to say, this weekend's matchups
with Dartmouth (also in sixth place) and Vermont (two points behind in eighth) are
crucial in the hunt for home ice advantage in the playoffs. Teams 1-4 get the first
week bye, teams 5-8 get home ice for the first round.

Dartmouth should come into Friday's game hungry after losing to travel partner
Vermont over the weekend by a score of 6-4. They are winless in their last four,
have lost three of those games, and have collectively allowed 20 goals in those losses.
League losses have come against Harvard, Brown, Clarkson, St. Lawrence, and Vermont,
but the Big Green have enjoyed a league wins as well including a four game
sweep of Colgate, nationally-ranked Cornell, Yale, and Princeton. Their final league
win came against Vermont on January 4.

Eight players on the Dartmouth roster have at least 10 points, with Lee Stempniak
leading the team with 26 points (17 GP, 12-14-26, 1.53 pts/gm). Hugh Jessiman is
three points behind with 10 goals and 13 assists. Defenseman Pete Summerfelt
leads the blueliners in points with 2-17-19.

Nick Boucher has been in goal for 11 games this season and holds a .880 sv%
and 3.91 GAA. He is 7-3-0 overall and 3-2-0 in the ECAC.

The Vermont Catamounts started the 2002-03 season very slowly, but have
picked up some crucial games coming into the heart of the conference schedule.
Their most recent win came against Dartmouth, and they have also taken games
from St. Lawrence, Princeton, and Colgate. Three of their league losses have come
by a one-goal margin.

Jeff Miles leads Vermont offensively with his 12 goals and six assists (.947 pts/
gm). Thoman Hajek and Jamie Sifers lead the defense offensively with 13 and 11
points respectively.

Shawn Conshafter has been in net for 14 games, holding a .896 sv% and 3.25
GAA. His record is at .500 in the conference and overall.

Dartmouth took three of four points from the Dutchmen last season with a 3-
3 tie at Achilles and a 3-2 win in New Hampshire. Scoring for Union in that series
was Jordan Webb (1-0-1), Joel Beal (0-1-1), Randy Dagenais (0-1-1), Marc Neron
(0-1-1), and Max Seel (0-1-1).

On the flipside, Union had a more successful series vs. the Catamounts, taking
both games and winning at Gutteron Fieldhouse for the first time in their Division
I history. The wins were by a score of 5-2 at Achilles and 4-0 in Vermont. Earning
points in the series for Union were Jordan Webb (2-1-3), Randy Dagenais (1-2-3),
Kris Goodjohn (0-3-3), Nathan Gillies (2-0-2), Marc Neron (1-1-2), Chris DiStefano
(1-0-1), and Max Seel (0-1-1).
