Now all alone in third after another impressive road sweep, the Union
Dutchmenare taking things a game at a time and relying on the standings to
take care ofthemselves. After this weekend, all ECAC schools should have
played 16 games,making the standings a little more clear.
The Dutchmen will face the Brown Bears this weekend, a team that they
previouslybeat 4-1 back in November. Special teams were a huge part of
Union's win,with two shorthanders being scored by Gillies, including the
gamewinner. MarcNeron added Union's other two goals and Randy Dagenais
assisted on three of thefour tallies.
Brown is currently in sixth place in the ECAC, having three wins in their
lastnine conference games. Their most recent wins came vs. Yale and
Princeton early inJanuary, but have lost their last three games to Hockey
East's Merrimack and Providence,and most recently, a league loss to
Harvard.
The Bears are led by Brent Robinson and Les Haggett offensively, with 24
pointand 23 points. Their top scoring defenseman is Paul Esdale with 16
points. YannDanis has been in goal for all but one game and holds a 8-9-1
overall record with a2.51 GAA and .914 sv%.
At the other end of the ice, freshman goalie Kris Mayotte has shone in his
lastfive games, improving to 10-5-2 overall. Mayotte was honored as the
ECAC's Goalieof the Week for the week of January 27, after shutting out
Dartmouth and allowingonly two goals vs. Vermont. In the last five games,
Mayotte holds a 1.78 GAA and.935 sv%.
A look ahead at next weekend…Union will host Yale and Princeton for the
annualAlumni Weekend. The Dutchmen will look for a split vs. Yale, who
defeatedUnion 7-3 earlier in the season, and a sweep of
Princeton.
