Hockey News: Union VS. RPI Closes Out the Achilles Season

Posted on Mar 6, 2003

Union's goal since day one has been the ECAC playoffs. And for the first time
in their Division I history, the Dutchmen are hosting a best-of-three ECAC firstround
series at Achilles Rink. Fittingly, the team picked to finish no better than
10th in the preseason polls is hosting RPI in a battle of Route 7, with much more
than bragging rights on the line.

Standing in the way of Union's goal of Albany are two weekends, the first taking
place this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at home. Regular-season records aside, the
two teams enter the weekend with a clean slate. But driving the Dutchmen is home
ice, the regular season record vs. RPI, and the rivalry that has made this first-round
series a media frenzy.

The Dutchmen and Engineers met twice this season, with Union earning a
point in January's 3-3 OT tie at Achilles. Since then, the Dutchmen went 7-6-0
while the Engineers went 2-11-1. While the overall standings show Union as the
favorite, the Dutchmen won't underestimate a team that beat them in December for
the first time in five games.

Union is led by the line of Nathan Gillies – Joel Beal – Jordan Webb, a line that
has combined for 108 points this season. Gillies, an ECAC Honor Roll member
this week, took home his fourth shorthander last weekend and added two assists to
his season total. He leads the ECAC in shorthanded goals and is second in the
nation. Webb and Beal each had assists on Friday. Kris Goodjohn is Union's other
30+ point scorer this season, adding another ECAC power play goal last weekend vs.
Vermont.

That's not to forget the blueliners: last weekend, it was Union's defense that
added six of 10 points. Matt Vagvolgyi (2-1-3), Chris DiStefano (1-0-1), Randy
Dagenais (0-1-1), and Brent Booth (0-1-1) all had points in the win vs. Vermont.
Vagvolgyi had a career night and is Union's second-leading scoring defenseman,
with 11 of his 12 points coming from ECAC contests. He was also an Honor Roll
selection this week.

Rensselaer also split last weekend, dropping a 7-1 decision to Dartmouth and
rebounding vs. Vermont 4-2. Eric Cavosie (2-1-3) and Kevin Croxton (1-1-2) led
Saturday and were key in the win. Leading the Engineers overall are Croxton (14-
14-28), Ben Barr (8-13-21), and Nolan Graham (7-14-21).

As this weekend ends the 2002-03 season home stand for the Dutchmen, Union
fans are encouraged to wear white all weekend in support of their team as they battle
to extend their amazing season. The Dutchmen have taken 2002-03 and rewritten
the record books, hoping to add another first with the March playoffs.

African Company presents Richard III goes up in Yulman

Posted on Mar 4, 2003

Opening Tuesday, March 4 at Yulman
Theater, The African Company Presents
Richard III
 is based on the real
story in 1821 of the first black theatrical group in America
as it battles racial prejudice with violent interpretations of white theater.
The troupe's motto: “Say ya Shakespeare like ya want.”

African Company runs through March 8 at 8 p.m., and March 9 at 2
p.m.

Written by Carlyle Brown, the play
is directed by Joanne Yarrow.

The seven member cast includes Phil
Chorba, Jamera Simmons, Ijeoma Mbamalu, Charles Holiday, Jhulian Newell-Little,
Andre Lake and Vanya Konn.

“The play is not about the black
experience,” said Yarrow. “It's about the perseverance of the human spirit.”

In 1821, the first black
theatrical troupe in the country, the African Company of New
York, was putting on plays in a downtown Manhattan
theater to which both black and white audiences flocked, according to the
playwright's notes. Shakespeare is the chosen cultural battleground in this
retelling of a little known, yet pivotal event in American history. Knowing
they are always under prejudicial pressures from white society, and facing
their own internal shakeups, the African Company battles for time, space, and
audiences and togetherness. Their competition, Stephen Price, an uptown,
Broadway-type impresario, is producing Richard
III
at the same time as the African Company's production is in full swing.
Price has promised a famous English actor overflowing audiences if he plays
Richard in Price's theater. Fearing his large white audiences will be lost to
the African Company, Price manipulates the law and closes down their theater.

Union First-Round Series a Part of ECAC’s Television Package

Posted on Mar 1, 2003

The Union College Department of Athletics along with the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) announced Monday that the Friday, March 7 game vs. RPI will be televised on NESN, the YES Network, and Leafs TV as part of the ECAC's Championship Hockey television package. The game will air live at 7pm on NESN, and on tape-delay on the YES Network (9pm, March 7) and Leafs TV (12pm, March 8).

“I am happy to announce that Phil Buttafuocco, ECAC Commissioner, has informed me that the RPI vs. Union game on Friday night will be televised on NESN, the YES Network and Leafs TV,” said Union Director of Athletics Val Belmonte. “We are thrilled and honored that the ECAC recognizes the accomplishments of the Union hockey program this season and how special this series is with our cross-town rivals. Televising play-off games leading to the championship will give the league an opportunity to showcase the best conference in college hockey…the ECAC.”

The Dutchmen will host the best-of-three series for the first time in their Division I history after placing sixth in the conference. With the first four seeds receiving a bye, Union will host Capital District rival Rensselaer (11th place) in the series to be played at Achilles Rink. Game time is set for 7pm Friday and Saturday (Sunday, if necessary).

“Union College is extremely excited to have the opportunity to host a first round ECAC hockey play-off series,” said Belmonte. “We are all very proud of the team's regular season performance. This home play-off series marks a significant achievement in the history of our men's ice hockey program and it sets a benchmark for future teams to strive for.”

This will be the second time the Engineers have visited Achilles this season, with the two teams skating to a 3-3 tie back in January. Belmonte is happy to see the rivalry renewed again this season.

“It is fitting that our opponent for our first ever Division I play-off series with be our cross-town rivals. We are anxiously looking forward to having the engineers of RPI in the confines of Achilles Rink. The Capital District college hockey fans will be in for a great series.”
