George Gmelch,
professor of anthropology, gave a public
lecture in April at the Field Museum in Chicago
in conjunction with the “Baseball as America”
exhibit. The exhibit is traveling to six U.S.
cities over two years and is expected to draw 4
to 5 million visitors. Gmelch's talk was on the globalization of
the sport and how the culture of professional baseball has changed since he was
part of the game in the 1960s, when he played for a minor league team of the
Detroit Tigers organization.
