Freshman goaltender, Kris Mayotte, was presented the Freshman Athletic Award.
The award is presented to a “freshman male for attitude, ability, participation, and achievement in intercollegiate sports.” Mayotte, an engineering major from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, had an overall record of 11-11-1 while helping Union's Division I men's ice hockey team to a record of 14-18-4. Mayotte, a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School, had a goals against average of 2.73 with a .905 save percentage. He had two shutouts (against non-league opponent the University of Connecticut and Eastern College Athletic Conference rival Dartmouth) while playing 1,473:58 minutes over 26 games for Union.
Mayotte became the first Dutchman to be named as the ECAC's “Goaltender of the Week,” as a freshman, an honor he won twice. A member of the ECAC's All-Rookie team, Mayotte had the best goals against average as well as the best save percentage for a freshman in Union's Division I history.
The Dutchmen, which concluded their 12th season at the Division I level, enjoyed an ECAC record of 10-10-2. Their sixth-place conference record allowed them to host the first playoff game in their Division I history.
