Senior Nina Mandel, who finished as Union's all-time leading scorer in lacrosse, was chosen as the winner of the
President's Commission on the Status of Women Senior Athletic Award. ,
The prize is awarded to the senior female student-athlete who has done the most to promote sports for women at Union College.
Selected as this year's Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association's “Player of the Year,” Mandel led the Dutchwomen in scoring with 41 goals, 31 assists and 72 points. Her career total of 135 goals, 84 assists and 219 points in 62 career games from her midfield position puts her on top of Union's 28-year career scoring list.
An All-Conference selection as well as an All-Academic selection throughout her career, Mandel was captain of this year's Dutchwoman team that posted an overall record of 11-5 and won its second New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic
Association postseason championship. Union enjoyed an overall record of 41-21
(a winning percentage of .672) with two appearances in the NYSWCAA tournament and one appearance in the NCAA National Championship event.
Among those seniors who were awarded Phi Beta Kappa, Mandel, who is a mathematics major, will be attending Harvard graduate school the next two years as she looks to complete her master's of arts in teaching. She is a native of Port Washington, New York and a graduate of Paul D. Schreiber High School.
Mandel, who was co-captain of this year's team, was selected to this year's All-State First-Team, the UCAA First-Team, was named as the “Most Valuable Player” of the state tournament, and was an Northeast Region First-Team All-American.
