Lunchtime jazz offered four Fridays this fall

Looking for some lunchtime jazz this fall?

Prof. Tim Olsen and other
Capital Region jazz artists will perform during four Fridays as
part of Olsen's class, “The History of Jazz.”

Class/concerts will be at 12:20
p.m. in Arts 215 on Sept. 19 (early jazz), Oct. 3 (swing), Oct. 24
(bebop) and Nov. 7 (modern jazz).

Admission is free and open to all. The four-concert series
is supported by the Performing Arts Department and the Internal Education Fund.

Prof. Butterstein presents on alligator reproduction

George Butterstein,  Florence
B. Sherwood Professor of Life Sciences, gave a presentation at the meeting of
the Society for the Study of Reproduction in Cincinnati
on July 19 titled “Steroid Patterns in Juvenile and Mature Male
Alligators” with co-authors Val Lance and Ruth Elsey of the San Diego Zoo,
where Butterstein spent last year as a researcher.

Prof. Rose is co-author of book chapter

Paul Rose, visiting assistant professor of
psychology, is co-author (with K. Campbell of the University of Georgia) of a
book chapter, “Greatness feels good: A telic model of narcissism and subjective
well-being” to appear in the forthcoming Advances
in Psychology Research,
edited by Frank Columbus (Nova Science Publishers,
Inc. Hauppauge, N.Y.)
“In spite of speculations to the contrary, a variety of research evidence has
accumulated suggesting that narcissists are satisfied with their lives,” the
authors write in the abstract. “In this paper, we review evidence in support of
this unpopular position, and we explain some of the reasons why narcissism is
positively correlated with happiness.”

Tenure committees set

consider the tenurability of two assistant professors: Steven Rice of Biology,
and Zoe Oxley of Political Science.

Faculty donations make South a home

When Suzie Benack, a member of the House System Implementation
Committee, gently suggested that her colleagues bring to South
College something that would make
the students feel at home, the faculty gladly responded.

At the recent open house, the shelves of one seminar room
were filled with all kinds of books (classics to beach novels), board games
(Trivial Pursuit, for one), mugs (some were to donate their 10-year service
mugs as “named gifts”) and playing cards, to name a few.

But
two slightly older books –- one worn, the other not — were especially interesting
for what their inscriptions said about the donor. In Handbook of Chemistry and Physics (45th edition), Kimmo
Rosenthal, dean for undergraduate education and professor of mathematics,
wrote, “I have not opened this book in over 30 years. I hope you make better
use of it.”

But
in Standard Mathematical Tables (14th
edition), he wrote, “This is a book that no home should be without.”
