Double Trouble is Back

Posted on Feb 5, 2004

Jordan Webb and Joel Beal led the way for the Dutchmen last

season with 37 points each, but both got off to slow starts this season.

With a combined 14 points in the last three games, Webb and

Beal seem to be back to last year's form and Union Double Trouble

duo is poised to lead a late-season charge for the Dutchmen. Webb

recorded his first career hat-trick against Sacred Heart, and picked

up two more goals against Dartmouth last Saturday night. Beal scored

Union's lone goal against Vermont, and has recorded three assists

for Union against the Pioneers and Big Green. It could be bad news

for the rest of the ECAC as it appears these boys are back!

Hockey alumni visit for key weekend series

Posted on Feb 5, 2004

Schenectady, NY – Union (9-13-4, 3-9-2) will face-off with Clarkson
(11-10-5, 6-6-2) and St. Lawrence (9-15-4, 5-8-1) in a key ECAC weekend
series this Friday and Saturday night at Messa Rink at Achilles Center.
Both games will begin at 7:00 pm.

The Dutchmen trail the Golden Knights by six points and the
Saints by three points in the battle for a spot in the top eight in the
ECAC standings and home ice in the first round of the upcoming league
playoffs. With only eight regular season games remaining, this
weekend's games will help determine the path the Dutchmen will follow
the rest of the season.

More than 40 Union Hockey alumni will be on campus Saturday for
an alumni hockey game at 11:00 am at Messa Rink. Included in the hockey
alumni weekend festivities will be a special on-ice ceremony to honor
the 1983-84 Dutchmen hockey team that skated to the college's first ever
NCAA hockey final four.

‘A front-row seat,’ new athletics web site is up and running

Posted on Feb 5, 2004

Union College Athletics Web Site

You missed the game, but you need to know: How did women's
basketball fare against Vassar on Saturday? (They won, 59-33.)

Or, did men's hockey shut out Dartmouth?
(They did, 7-0.)

Thanks to a new web site, all the Union scores and sports
stories are just a few mouse clicks away.

The site (http://www.union.edu/Athletics)
was the result of a months-long redesign by the Office of Communications
and the Department of Athletics.

With a garnet background and topped with rotating photos of
Union student-athletes, the site has a convenient summary of recent scores with
links to game recaps, a schedule of upcoming events, feature stories, links to
team pages and a fan poll.

“This new site gives our many fans a front-row seat to all
the action by providing up-to-date results, news, features and photos in an
attractive and user-friendly format,” said Val Belmonte, director of athletics.
“I'm thrilled to have this new site represent the College's programs and our student-athletes.
It combines the proud tradition of Union athletics with the bells and whistles
of the web.”

 “We're proud of the
look and feel of the new athletics site,” said Jim Feck, the College's web
director. “But what may be most exciting is what visitors won't see. The site
displays scores, stories and photos from a database, speeding the process by
which information is entered and making it possible to share the very latest
news – even in-game scores and scores and recaps from far-away road games.”

The process has benefited greatly from suggestions by many
friends of Union Athletics, and we look forward to more feedback as we roll out
our newest version. Please feel free to contact us at wwwstaff@union.edu.

Basketball’s Hammond latest UCAA honoree

Posted on Feb 4, 2004

Krystal Hammond

Freshman forward Krystal Hammond (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa)
became the latest Union basketball player to be honored by the Upstate
Collegiate Athletic Association since earning the conference's “Rookie
of the Week” award.

Sophomore guards Erika Eisenhut (Mohawk, N.Y./Mohawk) and John
Cagianello (Wethersfield, CT/Loomis Chaffee) were honored earlier this
year by the UCAA.

Hammond earned career highs in points (20) and rebounds (nine) in last
Saturday's 59-33 victory over UCAA rival Vassar. The victory not only
extended the Dutchwomen's conference-leading record to 7-0, it also
extended their current win streak to 10 and resulted in an overall
record of 15-2.

For the season, Hammond is averaging 6.4 points and 3.2 rebounds while
seeing an average of 13.5 minutes of playing time.

Eisenhut, the 2003 women's UCAA “Rookie of the Year” earned “Guard of
the Week” honors earlier this season for her outstanding play in road
wins over Middlebury, Hamilton and William Smith. All three opponents
went into the game with winning records.

John
Cagianello

Eisenhut is the Dutchwomen's third-leading scorer with her 9.1 average,
second on the team in assists with 35, and four in rebounds with her 3.4
average. Eisenhut's average playing time of 23.4 minutes leads the
Dutchwomen.

Cagianello, the 2002-03 men's UCAA “Rookie of the Year,” helped the
Dutchmen to a conference record of 4-3 and an overall standard of 14-4.
The Dutchmen's leading scorer with his 16.5 average, Cagianello's 39
field goals from three-point range are also a team-high.

The teams will honor their seniors this weekend as the Dutchmen and
Dutchwomen play their final regular-season home games against
Hobart/William Smith and Hamilton, respectively. On Friday night, the
Dutchmen will honor captain Imbrie Packard and forward Ryan Freundlich
prior to the start of their 8 p.m. contest. On Saturday, the Dutchwomen
will honor senior captains, guard Taryn Scinto, and forward Kelly Baker
before their 2 p.m. contest.

Both teams will play the final four regular-season UCAA contests on the
road. The regular-season champions will host the UCAA post-season
tournament on February 27 and 28 with the winner of that event earning
the conference's automatic berth in the NCAA tournament.
