Freshmen, Krystal Hammond and Colleen White,
were named co-recipients of this year's Terri Lynch-Jackie Havercamp Cuttita
Memorial Award. The award, which is being presented for the 24th year, is
presented to the freshman female student-athlete who has shown desire,
dedication, sportsmanship, and inspirational leadership on the field of
competition as well as in her daily life.
Hammond, a native of Clifton Park,
New York, and a graduate of Shenendehowa High School, and White, a native of Westport, Connecticut, and a graduate of Staples High School, each led her respective teams to the NCAA
tournament. Hammond's basketball team qualified for the national event for the
first time in the program's 29-year history of the sport while White's softball
squad earned its second-straight NCAA invitation.
Both teams won the Upstate Collegiate Athletic
Association championship. The basketball
Dutchwomen were 13-1 in conference play and a program-record 24-4 overall. The softball Dutchwomen were 7-1 in the UCAA
and 25-5 overall.
Hammond, a forward, finished fourth on the team's
statistical chart with her 6.7 scoring average and placed fifth in rebounding
with her 3.7 average. She was named the
UCAA “Rookie of the Week” once during the season.
White, who plays second base, finished second on
the Dutchwomen's batting chart with her .366 average. She led the team with 23 RBIs and eight
doubles, and was second in base hits (34) and third in runs scored with
21. White was also among the team's
fielding leaders with her .963 average.
This is only the second time in the history of
the award that it has been shared. Twin
sisters Molly and Elizabeth Flanagan (Simsbury, CT/Loomis
Chaffee) shared the honor in 2002.
