Michel Nehme

Fulbright Visiting Specialist Michel G. Nehme, a dean at Lebanon's
Notre Dame University,
will speak on “Hidden Drives of Islamic Politics” in a panel discussion on
Tuesday, Oct. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in
the Olin Building auditorium.

The event is free and open to the public.

Other panelists are Laury Silvers, professor of philosophy
and religion at Skidmore College;
and Fareed Z. Munir, professor of religious studies at Siena
College.

Nehme is on campus through Oct. 15 as part of the
Fulbright program “to promote dialogue between Americans and representatives of
the Muslim world.” In his one-month visit, he has taught a number of classes,
met with students and faculty and conducted public lectures.

On Tuesday, Oct. 5, he spoke on “Fear and Anxiety in the
Arab World,” addressing the atmosphere of politics in the Arab world and how it
affects individuals, nationalism, religions, minority groups and relationships
with the foreign world.

Nehme holds a doctoral degree in comparative politics from
Rutgers University.
He has been visiting or adjunct professor at Columbia
University, American
University, Kean
College and Madonna
University.

He is published widely on issues including Arab political
identity, the political economy of Saudi Arabian development and Lebanese
politics. His most recent book is Fear
and Anxiety in the Arab World
(University Press of Florida, 2003).

Nehme is dean of the faculty of political science, public
administration and diplomacy at Notre Dame
University in Lebanon.
