The College is hosting a conference on GenEd Science, “Multiple Pathways: Attracting
Students to Science” Oct. 14 through 16.

Made possible with
support from the Hewlett Foundation, the conference “is a
great opportunity to hear some well-known scientists speak about gen ed on
their campuses and to talk with faculty from other liberal arts colleges,”
according to Charlotte  Borst, dean of
arts and sciences.

Speakers are to include Darcy Kelly, a neuroscientist at Columbia
University who created a popular required first-year course, “Frontiers in
Science;” Tom Wetzel, professor of chemistry at Bates College and (with Union
Prof. Tom Werner) a
national leader in promoting undergraduate research; and Kevin Bedell, Rourke
Professor of Physics at Boston College, who will relate a renovation project at
BC that increased science majors and funded research.
