Prof. Hollocher authors primer on moon rocks

Kurt Hollocher, professor of geology,
authored a primer on moon rocks and soil that was featured in an article from
an on-line news digest from Science
Magazine.
Over several years, Hollocher borrowed
“Lunar Petrographic Thin Section Sets” from NASA,
offered as part of their educational outreach program and available on loan
from the Lunar Sample
Curator
. He used the sets in his undergraduate Petrology

Yu and Maleki make presentation on web books

curricular design specialist, presented a poster session, “Video clips of
classroom demonstrations for the web-book,” with Seyfollah Maleki, associate professor of physics, at the recent
Syllabus Conference in San Francisco,
Calif. They discussed web-books
developed by Maleki used in physics classes at Union.

Diane McNamara elected VP of telecom association

Diane McNamara, director of telecommunications, was recently
elected vice president of EADS Telecom North America User Group Association and
will serve a three-year term (including president in 2005 and past president in 2006).
EADS is the vendor of Union's telephone
equipment. She was also elected to a two-year
term as director-at-large for Association for Communications Technology
Professionals in Higher Education (ACUTA) and
appointed board liaison to the vendor committee for ACUTA
for 2004-2005.

Viniar Athletic Center to be dedicated

Dave Viniar, Class of 1976

The women and men's basketball teams invite the community
to a ceremony at their new home – the Viniar Athletic
Center – to honor donor David Viniar '76 on Saturday, Jan. 15, at 3:30 p.m., between the women's and men's games.

Viniar is a trustee and was a member of the 1974-75 basketball team that compiled a 20-4 record and an ECAC Upstate New York title.

After Union, he went on to graduate school at Harvard University, where he received his master's in business administration degree in 1980. He then joined the investment banking firm of Goldman Sachs & Co., where he became a partner in 1992 and chief financial officer in 1999.

An active alumnus, he has volunteered with the Career Development Center, served as an admissions representative, and participated as a member of Friends of Union Athletics. In 1997, he established the Leo and Evelyn Viniar Scholarship at Union in honor of his parents.

Both teams face Vassar, the women at 2 p.m., the men at 4
p.m. The first 500 through the door will receive a
“Dedication Collectible.”

Frank Messa ’73 to chair search

Frank Messa '73

Trustee Frank Messa will head
the search committee to identify the next president of the College, it was
announced by Board Chair Steve Ciesinski.

Roger Hull, 17th
president of Union, announced Monday he will
be stepping down June 30, the end of this academic year.

Messa graduated from Union in 1973 magna cum laude and was elected to
Phi Beta Kappa. He received his law degree from Albany Law School of Union
University in 1976, and has been active in College affairs including service as
a trustee and national chairman of the Annual Fund. Messa is a senior vice
president of Ayco, a Saratoga Springs-based financial services and planning
firm that was acquired by Goldman Sachs in 2003.
