Union women's track and field competitor Hannah LaMoy (Gardiner/Walkill) never needs to cram when it comes to the record book. She knows it by heart, yet still studies it throughout the season. Last week, she set a Liberty League outdoor championships record and also a new Union College record by winning the high jump, her signature event. She won the event at Hamilton College with a jump of 1.59 meters, which broke her own school mark of 1.58.

Entering Saturday's event, the Liberty League outdoor meet record for the women's high jump was 1.55, set in 1996 by a competitor from Rensselaer. Brittany O'Neal of Rensselaer and Jenny Orbaker of Hamilton had impressive jumps Saturday and came close to the meet record, scoring at 1.54. But LaMoy blew away the competition, as well as the nine-year old meet record, with her stunning 1.59 meter leap.

LaMoy also won the Liberty League indoor high jump title on February 13 at Hamilton. She opened this season by winning the high jump at the Williams College Invitational on April 9.

Union Head Coach Larry Cottrell is impressed with LaMoy, personally as well as in her peformances.

“Hannah comes to practice and gets it done,” commented the coach. “She is a big asset to have for our program. Hannah is very coachable, has been plugging along and truly enjoys it. She broke the indoor record and won the Colgate indoor meet, then she turned around and won at Williams and last week in the outdoor season.”

Chris Darlington, a former Union Dutchman competitor, assists on the staff and has worked very closely with the jumpers.

Associate head track and field coach Dave Riggi knows that Hannah can make an impact with her teammates as well.

“I think we had a very positive day with some solid performances, including Hannah's,” said Riggi. “We have a relatively young team and I'm looking forward to the next few meets and to next year. I feel the team has a lot of potential.”

The Dutchwomen will head right back to Hamilton College this weekend, for the Hamilton Invitational Saturday. The ECAC's await on May 20 and the NCAA's are on tap for May 25.

Head to the Union College Bookstore…and look for a used record book, it was probably used by Hannah LaMoy. But, you better get it fast, she will likely be coming back for it once again.
