This week the Albany Rural Cemetery honored one of Union's most renowned alumni – Chester A. Arthur, Class of 1848, the nation's 21st president – on the 176th anniversary of his birth. Brigadier General F. David Sheppard of the Division of Military and Naval Affairs in Latham presented a wreath from President Bush at Arthur's gravesite. Arthur was elected vice president under President James A. Garfield. After Garfield's death, he became president in September 1881 and served one term.
