Artemis String Quartet comes to campus Feb. 12

Posted on Feb 1, 2006

In an eagerly anticipated Capital Region performance, the acclaimed Artemis String Quartet, based in Vienna, will play at Memorial Chapel on Sunday, Feb. 12, at 3 p.m. as part of College's Chamber Concert Series. Circumstances surrounding tightened security measures and travel restrictions forced the group to cancel its 13-city U.S. tour in 2002.

Artemis String Quartet

Hailed by critics and music lovers the world over, Artemis has taken center stage as the premiere string quartet in contemporary chamber music. Their playing has been variously described as “gorgeous,” “impeccable” and “seamless.”

Musicians include Natalia Prischepenko and Heime Müller on violins, Volker Jacobsen on viola and Eckart Runge on cello. Their second series performance will feature Mozart's No.22 in B flat, K. 589 (“Prussian #2”); Bartok's No.4; and Schubert's No. 13 in a, D. 804.

Tickets, at $20 for general public, $10 for area students and free for Union students, are available in advance at the Events Office at the Facilities Building, or at the door at 2 p.m. For more information, call ext. 6080 or 372-3651.

Birth of a great idea: Wells volunteers will mind

Posted on Feb 1, 2006

Zack Lazovik, Wells babysitting service, winter 2006

It's not premature to talk about the newest brainchild of Wells House, Union's own community service theme house.

For a small charitable donation, Wells students will watch your kids at your home.

“The cost of childcare today is crazy,” says Zack Lazovik '07, who started the group “as a way to reach out to our hard-working Union employees and to Schenectady. We will not be charging for our services, but we give you the opportunity to make a small donation to one of our local charities.”

He is asking other campus groups to pitch in and help out. With a rush of early responses, it looks like he'll need it – a recent single email generated about two dozen replies from interested faculty and staff.

Lazovik says there are now 20 qualified student sitters, most from Wells, who will work in pairs for up to four hours at a time. Contact him (lazovikz@union.edu) or House Manager Sarah Shea (sheas@union.edu) for details. His advice: plan ahead.

Union mourns passing of Coretta Scott King

Posted on Feb 1, 2006

Coretta Scott King

In a letter to the Union College campus community, Interim President, Jim Underwood requested that the Union community collectively offer its condolences to the King family, in honor of the passing of Coretta Scott King.

Civil rights activist Martin Luther King III recently spoke at Union during the week celebrating his father's legacy. In the Jan. 18 campus visit, the son of Coretta Scott King and Martin Luther King Jr. urged his Union audience to help keep his father's dream of racial equality for all alive.

“Since we recently opened our doors to hear him speak, I thought it would be fitting to send condolences,” Underwood noted.

He urged that all cards, poems and messages of sympathy be sent via campus mail to Gretchel Tyson at the Kenney Community Center by February 6. Those wishing to make a donation can make checks payable to The King Center. For more information, visit www.thekingcenter.org.
