For the second year, Campus Action has constructed the Iraq War Memorial display. 2,399 stakes line the walkways of campus.
Each stake has the name and age of every American soldier that died in Iraq. It will be in place through May 5.
There is also a display in the front of the library that contains 175 nameless stakes. Each one of the blank markers represents 200 Iraqis for the estimated 35,000 Iraqi civilian deaths caused by the war.
Junior Ian Kennedy said it's also important to recognize the amount of hard work the approximately 30 Union College students put into constructing the display.
Campus Action, a social action group, aims to support the growth of social change on Union's campus, within the community and in society at large.
In a statement released by the group, members say they have been careful to simply remind people about the loss of life, not present either a pro or anti-war sentiment.
“We want to leave this interpretation to the viewer,” said Kennedy.
“However, regardless of an individual's opinion about Iraq, we feel it is vitally important to fully recognize that the war continues, and American soldiers as well as Iraqi civilians continue to die.”
