Jennifer Lawless '97, who faced an uphill battle in unseating a popular incumbent in the Democratic primary for Rhode Island's 2nd Congressional district seat, came up short in her first bid for public office Tuesday.
Lawless, a Brown University professor, collected more than 38 percent of the vote, compared to 61 percent for three-term incumbent U.S. Rep. James R. Lanevin, according to unofficial results.
One of her senior policy advisers for the campaign was Richard Fox, a political science professor at Union. The two recently co-authored a book, “It Takes a Candidate: Why Women Don't Run for Office.”
Lawless was a political science major at Union and salutatorian of her class.
