Professor Steven Stich of Rutgers University will talk Thursday about “Altruism, Evolution and Ethics,” as part of the Philosophy Speaker Series.


The discussion begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Schaffer Library Phi Beta Kappa Room and is free and open to the public.


Stich is professor of Philosophy and Cognitive Science at Rutgers University. He is also Honorary Professor of Philosophy at the University of Sheffield. Previously he taught at the University of California at San Diego, the University of Maryland, and the University of Michigan. A recipient of numerous academic awards and honors, his special areas of interest are philosophy of mind, cognitive science, philosophy of language, and epistemology.


His books include “From Folk Psychology to Cognitive Science: The Case against Belief” (1983); “The Fragmentation of Reason” (1990); “Deconstructing the Mind” (1996); and “Mindreading” (2003). He is also editor (or co-editor) of “Innate Ideas” (1975); “The Recombinant DNA Debate” (1979); “Philosophy and Connectionist Theory” (1991); “Mental Representation” (1994); “Benacerraf and His Critics” (1996); “The Cognitive Basis of Science” (2002, 2006); “The Blackwell Guide to Philosophy of Mind” (2003); and “The Innate Mind” (2006).
