Union has been named “Employer of the Year” by the Schenectady ARC for its efforts to provide jobs and training to dozens of people with disabilities.
The College is among a group of major businesses who have developed a partnership with the local Association for Retarded Citizens to assist adults with disabilities. Other employers who participate in the ARC's New Directions Employment Services program include Price Chopper, Lowe's and Hannaford.
Through the ARC, Union has employed 23 adults with disabilities since 1997. Last April, the lacrosse team partnered with ARC to promote Autism Awareness Month and provided a free lacrosse clinic for local children.
Union also serves as a summer worksite for the ARC Student Work Experience program, which helps students with disabilities prepare for life after high school.

“This has been a great experience for the College,” said George Ferro, manager of Upperclass Dining Services. “The ARC sends us people who are really motivated and want to succeed, and we put them right to work.”
Ferro said the employees referred by ARC enjoy the work experience provided by the College, especially since the jobs are among the most difficult to fill.
“They are very appreciative of having a means to be a part of the system,” said Ferro.
“Schenectady ARC is thrilled to honor Union College with our agency's Employer of the Year award,'' said Linda Lahaie, the agency's executive director. “Union's commitment, compassion, encouragement and flexibility is second to none and has promoted success to each of the individuals they employ. On behalf of the Board of Directors, staff and all of the individuals we serve, I salute Union College for recognizing the potential of individuals with developmental disabilities in the workplace.”
The College will be honored at the ARC's annual awards dinner Thursday, Nov. 9, at River Stone Manor, Glenville.
