“Have a safe new year” is more than a holiday slogan, thanks to several campus safety projects launched over winter break. These include:

• increased night security patrol

• training for 12 security officers to become New York state-sanctioned Private College Security Officers

• removal of branches, bushes and trees that hinder campus views and offer possible hiding spots for intruders

• replacement of lights behind Fox and Davidson halls

Other changes are under way, as well, including upgrading lighting fixtures in residences and dark areas and installing emergency phones and surveillance cameras in select areas. The College also is collaborating with the Schenectady District Attorney's Office and the Schenectady Police Department to install surveillance cameras in the campus vicinity. The heavily traveled walkway from Union Street to Nott Street (in front of the flag pole) will also be made more secure. There are security alarms on all residences.

While the College steps up safety, President Stephen Ainlay is asking individuals to think and practice safety as a routine part of campus life. For instance, keep building doors closed – not propped open – for maximum protection.

“We need every member of the Union community to help make this campus safe for all,” Ainlay said.
