
Richard James Hoagland '92 of Edison, N.J., died Jan. 6 as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in which his mother, Sheryl Burdick Hoagland, also died. He was 36.
Hoagland is survived by his wife, Clara, his father, John, and his younger sister, Rachael.
A native of Catskill, N.Y. and 1988 graduate of Gilboa-Conesville Central High School, Hoagland majored in political science at Union, where he was a member of Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Honor Society for Political Science, and Psi Upsilon. He also was a Phonathon volunteer.
He received a Bachelor of Arts degree with honors.
Hoagland earned a law degree from Cornell University Law School in 1995. Admitted to the bar in New York and New Jersey, he worked at Riker Danzig, Shearman & Sterling and at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer before joining Kattan Muchin Rosenman LLP in New York City, where he was a partner in the real estate practice group. He specialized in structured real estate finance and international real estate
The partners, attorneys and staff of Katten Muchin Rosenman described Hoagland as “a first rate real estate lawyer with limitless potential. He was an avid golfer, well liked and respected by all.”
Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, Jan. 12, at 11 a.m. at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Metuchen, N.J. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the name of Richard Hoagland to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, P.O. Box 78960, Phoenix, AZ 85062-8960.
