I am writing about a long-time friend and a member of the Union College family, John J. Audino, head football coach for the last 14 years.

I met John in the early 80s when he was offensive coordinator and I played defense. Our philosophies toward the game could not have been more different, but our commitment to the Union community and the football program was the same.

John recently received the Meritorious Service Award [from the Alumni Council], a rarity for a coach. As noted on the College's Web site, “He has been a true educator, teaching his players that there is also much fulfillment outside of football. Through leadership by example, Audino and his coaching staff have instilled in hundreds of players a strong commitment to school, community and family.”

I can tell you, those words do not ring hollow with John.

He called me every day in 2001 and 2002 when my wife was battling breast cancer. And he has stood by me during my 6-year-old son's battle with a disease that is robbing him of his sight. We still have our share of disagreements, as any friends do. However, I will not forget what he has done for me and many other former players.

I am glad that he has been recognized for achievements that go beyond his win-loss record.
