Lawless

Jennifer Lawless '97, who faced an uphill battle in unseating a popular incumbent in the Democratic primary for Rhode Island's 2nd Congressional district seat, comes to campus Monday, Jan. 29, 12:50 p.m. to discuss “Running for the U.S. Congress: Reflections from the Campaign Trail.” The Pizza & Politics event will be held in SSCI 104.

Lawless, who came up short in her first bid for public office, is a Brown University professor. She collected more than 38 percent of the vote, compared to 61 percent for three-term incumbent U.S. Rep. James R. Lanevin. One of her senior policy advisers for the campaign was Richard Fox, professor of Political Science. The two co-authored a book, “It Takes a Candidate: Why Women Don't Run for Office.” Lawless was a political science major at Union and salutatorian of her class.
