For the second straight year, an ethnically diverse group of potential student leaders from the Boston area – known as Posse Scholars – has been acclimating to, and enjoying, the many charms of Union life.
"Union is a welcoming place," says Gina Cesar '11. "It feels like I'm living in a small village. I'm pretty shy, yet slowly, but surely, I'm meeting people, and we're learning about each other. What I like best are the small classes. My professors know my name."
Cesar is in the second Posse group, which contains 11 students. Ten Posse Scholars who are members of the Class of 2010 completed their first year at Union in June, enhancing the breadth and depth of Union's rich educational experience. The students earned scholarships through a process run by the national Posse Foundation.
Like Cesar, Kenrick Liu '10, of Malden, Mass., enjoys the intimacy of Union. "You can get to know them on a personal basis," he says of his professors. "It’s better than just going to class, taking notes and leaving."
At Union, Posse students find support from the College and each other. A recent Posse Plus retreat focusing on social responsibility, held in Saratoga Springs, brought together 100 members of the Union Community.
The Posse program's name was inspired by a conversation with an inner city New York City dropout who never would have left college "if I had my posse with me."
