Women’s and Gender Studies will launch a new lecture series, “Feminisms for the 21st Century,” Thursday, Oct. 16, 12:40-1:45 p.m. in the Sadock WGS lounge on the third floor of Reamer Campus Center.

Michaele Ferguson of the University of Colorado at Boulder will present “Bitch is the New Black: The Failure of Feminists to Think Intersectionally During the 2008 Presidential Race.”

Ferguson is co-editor, with WGS Program Director Lori Marso, of “W Stands for Women: How the George W. Bush Presidency Shaped a New Politics of Gender (Duke University Press, 2007).

“Our series features established and emerging feminist scholars who emphasize the links between feminist politics, the struggle for racial justice and human rights activism,” said Marso. “We are sponsoring two events this fall, and five throughout the year.”

The second fall lecture is set for Thursday, Oct. 23, 12:40-1:45 p.m. Kathy Ferguson, a faculty member at the University of Hawaii, will speak on “Bush in Drag: Palin, McCain and the Endless War." Ferguson has published extensively on feminist critiques of militarism and is completing a book on anarchist and political activist Emma Goldman.

The new lecture series is made possible by Valerie J. Hoffman ’75, a member of Union’s Board of Trustees.
