‘One Second Everything Changes’

Jeff Wilkin from the Daily Gazette stopped by the Mandeville Gallery for a feature on a new exhibit, “One Second, Everything Changes.” The exhibit focuses on the children and young adults impacted by alcohol-related and impaired-driving crashes in the Capital Region. It is presented by the Lewis Henry Morgan Institute and sponsored by the Mandeville Gallery and Schenectady County STOP-DWI program. Curated by Denis Foley, a DWI program leader and public anthropologist, it runs through the end of the month.

Research proposal deadlines noted

The deadline for faculty-initiated Internal Education Foundation (IEF) proposals is Friday, Jan. 22. Faculty members who have educationally innovative proposals should submit them to David Hayes, dean of Academic Departments (S&E, S100). Forms and guidelines are
available at www.union.edu/Academics/AcademicAffairs/PoliciesForms. Questions? Contact Hayes at hayesd@union.edu. 

The deadline for student-initiated IEF proposals is Thursday, Jan. 28. These must have written approval from a faculty advisor who has agreed to supervise the project.  They should be directed to Professor Kristin Fox at foxk@union.edu.  For complete guidelines, go to www.union.edu/Resources/Academic/undergrad_research/ief/index.php.

The Research and Grants Committee and the Humanities Development Fund (HDF) Committee are soliciting grant proposals to support faculty scholarship activities. Wold Building ‘topping off’ set for Wednesday

A “topping off” ceremony – placement of the final steel beam – for the Peter Irving Wold Center for Science and Engineering will be held Wednesday, Jan. 20, at 1 p.m. in the courtyard adjoining the Reamer Campus Center and the F.W. Olin Center.  This traditional builders' custom is meant to symbolize growth and good luck.

In keeping with tradition, all members of the Union community and alumni family are invited to sign the beam beforehand. It will be available at Reamer Tuesday, Jan. 19, 9 a.m.- 6 p.m., and Wednesday, 9-11 a.m.  Members from the Student Alumni Association will be on hand to help out. 

Hot beverages will be available in the Olin Center Rotunda before the ceremony. In case of bad weather, the ceremony will be held at Schaffer Library.

The three-story, 35,000-square-foot research and education facility is slated for completion next year.
