The campus will be filled with garnet pride Friday through Sunday, Oct. 15-17, as alumni, students and faculty celebrate Homecoming and Family Weekend with everything from dinners and discussions to tours and tailgates.
“We are looking forward to welcoming back more than 2,000 alumni, families and friends to celebrate,” said Tammy Messercola, director of Alumni Relations.
Among the highlights is a panel discussion marking the 40th anniversary of co-education at Union, set for Saturday, 2 p.m. in the Strauss Unity Lounge in Reamer Campus Center. The event will feature prominent alumnae from the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s reflecting on campus life, career choices and gender equality. Participants include Valerie Hoffman ’75, Adrian Maclean Jay ’98, Kathy Magliato ’85, Ann Marie Nabi ’70 and Kelly Williams ’86.
Other weekend events include:
– A talk by Dr. Barry Goldstein ’73, photographer and author of “Gray Land: Soldiers on War,” which includes candid interviews with soldiers of the Iraq War.
– An exploration of Brazil as an emerging world powerhouse, “Brazil: What Difference Will the World Cup and Olympic Games Make?,” featuring Theresa Meade, the Florence B. Sherwood Professor of History and Culture, and Eric Langner ’12
– A presentation by Professor Stephen Berk (in addition to his annual Sunday Hillel lecture), “Is the Cold War Over: Russia and the United States in Our Time”
– A book signing and discussion of Professor of Psychology Christopher Chabris’s “The Invisible Gorilla, and Other Ways Our Intuitions Deceive Us”
– A faculty panel discussion on “Teaching the Arts at Union”
– A look at “Union in the Green Century: Education, Research and Campus Initiatives to Foster Sustainability”
The Union football team takes on St. Lawrence University at 1 p.m. Saturday at Frank Bailey Field. Union teams also compete in women’s hockey, men’s and women’s crew, and men’s and women’s soccer over the weekend.
