Proctor’s Offers Discount Tickets

President Roger H. Hull and Schenectady Mayor Albert Jurczynski will

examine “The Union-Schenectady Relationship: Tomorrow” on Monday, May 3, at 7

p.m. in the Nott Memorial.

The leaders will discuss current and future initiatives aimed at improving the college

and the city.

Their talk will cap a three-part series that began April 21 on the Union-Schenectady

relationship.

Ed Lallier was coordinator of the series, sponsored by Wells House.

Committee Seeks Input on Report

Copies of the draft of the Middle States Report are

available in the Student Activities office and at the Circulation Desk in

Schaffer Library.

The Middle States Steering Committee invites input.

Comments should be directed to the co-chairs of the

Steering Committee: Dean Christie Sorum in Feigenbaum Hall

(sorumc@union.edu) or to Prof. Alan Taylor in the Mathematics Department

in Bailey Hall (taylora@union.edu).

The College has joined with Proctor's Theater to offer

a limited number of discount tickets for several shows at the theater.

Tickets at 10 to 20 percent discount are available for Smokey

Joe's Café on Feb. 11 ($35.55), Les Miserables on March 30

($44.55) and Ragtime on June 8 ($44.55)

Employees and students may reserve tickets through Human

Resources (ext. 6108) before Sept. 23.

Chemists Present at NERM ’99

Three faculty and 10 undergraduate research students

from chemistry attended or gave presentations at NERM '99, the Northeast

Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society.

James C. Adrian Jr., assistant professor, presented on

“Titanium Enolate Addition to Aldimines: A Case for Lewis Acid

Activation.” His co-author was Jennifer E. Chick '99.

Julia L. Barkin '00, presented on her work with Lamyaa

Hassib '98, under Adrian: “Beta-Amino Esters Via the Reformatsky

Reaction: Restraining Effects of the Ortho-Methoxyphenyl

Substituent.”

Mary Carroll, associate professor, presented a talk

titled “Investigation of On-line Determination of Ethanol with

Diode-laser-based Detection.” Manisha Tinani '96 was co-author.

Michael Hagerman, assistant professor, gave a talk on

“Controlling the Inner Architecture of Polymer-Clay

Nanocomposites” in the Nanoparticles symposium.

Also, Chemistry Club officers Jason P. Shames '01, and

Julia L. Barkin '00 presented an invited talk on the “Activities

and Perspectives of the Union College Chemistry Club.” Club advisors

Carroll and Hagerman were co-authors.

New faculty Welcomed

The College welcomes 20 new faculty members this fall.

Continued from last issue, they are:

Megan Ferry, assistant

professor of Chinese, holds a Ph.D. from Washington University in St.

Louis. She has taught at WU, Emory University and the University of

Missouri at St. Louis.

Andrea Foroughi, assistant

professor of history, earned a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota with

a dissertation that used a case study of Nininger, Minn., from 1847 to

1870 to analyze the gendered components of frontier community evolution.

John Fox, visiting professor

of anthropology, was a research associate in the American section of the

University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. He was

chair of anthropology at Baylor University, where he taught for 20 years.

He earned his Ph.D. at the University at Albany.

Yana Hashamova, visiting

assistant professor of Russian, holds a Ph.D. from the University of

Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her interests include 20th century European

literature, film and painting, gender studies and postmodern theory.

Robert Hislope, assistant

professor of political science, earned a Ph.D. from Ohio State University

with a dissertation titled “Nationalism, Ethnic Politics and

Democratic Consolidation: A Comparative Study of Croatia, Serbia and

Bosnia-Hercegovina.

Alexander Hollman, visiting

assistant professor of classics, has been teaching at Harvard University,

where he earned his Ph.D. His interests include Greek literature (archaic

and classical) Greek prose (historiographic and ethnographic) and Greek

religion and magic.

David Ogawa, visiting

assistant professor of visual arts, earned a Ph.D. from Brown University

with a dissertation on “Conditions of Beholding: Images of Femininity

in the Work of Jean Baptiste Camille Corot.” He has also held

teaching posts at Marist College, Assumption College, Worcester Art

Museum, Brown University, and Rhode Island School of Design.

Thomas Rieg, visiting

assistant professor of psychology, earned a Ph.D. from the University of

Rhode Island. His dissertation was titled “Differential Reinforcement

of Other Behavior: Response-Reinforcement Contingency and

Contiguity.” He previously held teaching posts at Winona (Minn.)

State University, Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va., and

Eastern Virginia Medical School.

Admissions representatives have been showing it to

students on the road. Now, it can be viewed on streaming video.

“Hey, I'd go there,” said one senior after

viewing it.
