Steve Leavitt, assistant professor of anthropology,
has co-edited a book with Gilbert Herdt titled Adolescence in Pacific Island Societies (University
of Pittsburgh Press, 1998). It includes a series of case studies from throughout the
Pacific, and it focuses on themes of adolescent experience and cultural change.

Rudy Nydegger, associate professor of psychology,
had an article titled “Continuing Education for Psychologists in New York”
published in the New York State Psychological Association “Notebook”
(Vol.X, No. 5, Fall 1998). This work involved a survey he designed to determine some of
the issues surrounding the requirement of continuing education for psychologists licensed
in New York. Every member of the state association was polled. This article discussed the
findings and implications of the results.

Frank Pone Mourned

The College mourns the loss of Frank J. Pone, a chef at
West College Dining for the past year, who died Oct. 6. He was 51.

Born in Schenectady, he was a lifelong area resident and a
1964 graduate of Bishop Gibbons High School. He also was a 1997 graduate of Schenectady
County Community College's culinary arts program.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Spragg Pone of
Rotterdam; and two daughters, Nicole and Brittney.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Schenectady
County Community College Foundation, Culinary Arts Program, 78 Washington Ave.,
Schenectady, N.Y. 12305.

1. The minutes of September 28, 1998 were
approved.

2. The course proposals sent forward by
the Subcouncil on Courses and Programs were approved as amended.

3. Discussion of calendar change began
with a brief review of Union's calendar history. Issues of loading and the appeal of
trimesters for students were discussed.

Innovation is Topic of Feigenbaum Forum

Two of
the world's leading authorities on Total Quality Management will be featured in a
discussion titled “Communicating Across Boundaries: A Foundation for Innovation”
on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 3:30 p.m. in the Conference Room in Feigenbaum Hall.

Armand V. and Donald S. Feigenbaum, principals of General
Systems Co. of Pittsfield, Mass., are to participate in the third annual Feigenbaum Forum.
Named two years ago in their honor, the Feigenbaum Forum brings leaders from the academic
and business worlds together at Union College to discuss issues of mutual interest and
concern.

Panelists include Armand and Donald Feigenbaum; Dennis M.
Donovan, vice president of human resources at GE Power Systems; James Mandell, dean of
Albany Medical College; Joseph Zolner, director of Union's Graduate Management
Institute; Linda Cool, dean of faculty; and President Roger Hull.

The Feigenbaums, both Union grads, are founders of General
Systems Company in Pittsfield, Mass. The company designs and implements integrated
management systems for major corporations and organizations throughout the world.
