(Dec. 1, 2004) — Union College recently became a member of the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency's “Green Power Partnership,” a designation to honor businesses,
educational institutions, government agencies, municipalities, and
not-for-profit organizations that purchase power from renewable energy sources.
In the fall of 2003, Union converted 5 percent
of its energy purchases to power derived from windmills.
“We are pleased that the EPA
recognizes Union's commitment to cleaner,
renewable, alternative sources of energy,” said Union College President Roger
Hull. “In this day and age, we all have to do our part, and we hope others will
join us in this and other environmentally advantageous programs.”
Although wind power costs slightly
more than traditional sources (about two cents more per kilowatt hour), there
is no pollution produced and no fuel needed in its production. The wind power,
which is part of the state's energy grid, is produced at the Fenner Wind Project in Madison County, New York's largest
wind farm.
According to the EPA, the goal of
the Green Power Partnership is to facilitate the growth of the green power
market by lowering the cost and increasing the value of green power. A strong
green power market will support new, clean technologies that will reduce the
environmental impact of electricity generation, the nation's single largest
industrial source of air pollution.
The College was first recognized
for its use and support of wind power at an award ceremony earlier this year in
Albany. The
event was hosted by two environmental groups, an energy developer and a state
energy agency. Union joined four other colleges as well as 10 municipalities
and six commercial businesses in New
York State
to convert a portion of their energy purchases to power derived from windmills.
Other colleges in the state who
purchase wind power are Hobart & William Smith, Pace
University, Bank
Street College,
and the State University
at Buffalo.

Partnership and to see the full list of members and honorees, go to http://www.epa.gov/greenpower/

About the
Dutchmen… Union (7-6-1, 6-0-0
ECACHL) looks to bounce back after its first loss in almost a month this
weekend as they resume ECACHL play on the road against Harvard and Brown.
The Dutchmen fell to Holy Cross in the consolation game of the Dunkin' Donuts
Coffee Pot by a 3-1 score after tying Merrimack 4-4, but losing the shootout to
see who advanced to the championship game by a score of 2-1. The tie to
Merrimack prevented Union from setting a record for the longest winning streak
in team history, but instead tied the record set back on January 10, 1997 when
the team won its sixth straight game. Holy Cross also played the role of
spoiler by thwarting Union's bid of going unbeaten in the month of November.
However, the team's
performance in the Dunkin' Donuts Coffee Pot may have provided them with the
caffeine shot of reality they needed, just in time to defend its first-place
position in the ECAC Hockey League. The team's unblemished league mark
makes them a target every time out as opponents set their sights on becoming
the first to try and knock Union off its perch. This pair of games is no
different with the opposition tied for fourth in the league entering this
weekend. After this the Dutchmen will not see a league foe until they return
home January 7th to take on Vermont.
In the meantime Union has won
six of its last eight games, outscoring the opposition 34-25. Six of
those games have been by two goals or less. Scoring the majority of those
goals has been senior captain Jordan Webb (Kneepan, ONT), who is third
in the nation with 12 total goals and tied for first with eight power play
tallies. As a team, Union has 19 power play goals. Webb has lit the
lamp four times in his last five games and is second on the team with 16 points.
.
Junior Scott Seney (Silver
Spring, MD) has registered five points in his last four games with three goals
and two assists. He leads the team with 11 assists and 17 points.
He scored his first career hat trick against Princeton back on November
19th. Seney also had career-high three assists against St. Lawrence back
on November 5th.
Junior Jonathan Poirier (St.
Jerome, QUE) is third on the team with 14 points, registering three in his last
three contests with two goals and an assist. He has five goals on the
season, four scored on the power play, and is second on the team with nine
assists. He is the only player to appear in at least 75 percent of the
games without any penalties.
Sophomore Olivier Bouchard (Quebec City, QUE) tops off Union's double-digit point scorers with
13. He has five points in his last four games with two goals and three
assists. He leads the team with two game-winning goals.
Goaltenders Kris Mayotte (Pittsburgh, PA) and Justin Mrazek (Regina,
SASK) split time between the pipes for Union after Mayotte started the first
three games of the season. Mayotte is 4-3-1 with a 3.84 goals against
average and a .880 save percentage. He made a season-high 42 saves
against St. Lawrence on November 5th. Mrazek has a 3-3 record with a 1.68
goals against average and a .935 save percentage. He made a career-high
29 saves against Bowling Green on October 23rd.

The women's basketball team is FINALLY getting some
respect. Despite winning the Liberty
League's regular-season AND tournament championship….AND advancing to the
second round of the NCAA tournament where they gave a more experienced New York
University team all it could handle on its own court…AND finishing the 2003-04
season with an overall record of 24-4, the Dutchwomen were still not among the
D3hoops.com preseason Top 25.
Katlyn Cunningham
That changed, however, after Union opened the season with a
convincing 52-41 non-league victory over previously (3-0) WILLIAMS! The Dutchwomen were ranked 25th
in this week's poll after receiving 70 points.
The Dutchwomen are the only Liberty League team in the poll and join No.
2 NYU and No. 8 Rochester as the only New York State teams in the top 25.
“It is nice to get the recognition,” said head coach Mary
Ellen Burt, who picked up her 120th career victory (all at Union) in
the win over the Ephs. “I'm happy for
the players and happy for the program,” she continued. “But, we have to remember that it took us a
long time to break into the poll and it won't take much at all to drop us
out. Like I said, it is nice to be
recognized, but we'll have to work that much harder to stay there.”
Melissa Marra
Playing the very first basketball game in the history of the
brand new (and beautiful!) Viniar Sports Complex, the Dutchwomen scored the
game's final 12 points over the final 5:11.
Trailing 41-40, senior forward Katlyn Cunningham (Clarksburg, MA)
started the game-ending rally by converting one of two free throws.
Senior guard Melissa Marra (Mechanicville, NY) gave the Dutchwomen the lead for
good by canning a jumper with 4:19 showing before Cunningham converted a pass
from Marra then hit the following free throw to make it 46-41 with 3:03
remaining. Sophomore forward Krystal Hammond (Clifton Park, NY) connected
on one of two free throws with 2:29 left before Cunningham's layup gave Union
an eight-point lead, 49-41, with 1:45 on the clock. Marra rounded out the
final margin by hitting a free throw at 1:20 and then connecting on two more
with 55 seconds remaining.
Cunningham, who was playing with four fouls, led Union's
rally by contributing six points, five rebounds and an assist over the final
5:11 while Marra added five points, an assist and a rebound.
Junior guard Erika Eisenhut (Mohawk, NY), who missed the
entire preseason while starting for the 19-2-1 ECAC Upstate New York champion
soccer team, led the Dutchwomen with 15 points.
