Garnet and Gray: FYI — National Science Foundation funds third MRI Grant

Posted on Sep 1, 2002

The National Science Foundation Major Research Instrumentation (NSF-MRI) program recently made a $254,457
grant to establish an Aerogel Fabrication, Characterization, and Applications Lab
at Union.

An aerogel is a fragile nanostructure consisting of approximately 90-99 percent air. The new lab is a collaborative effort between the Chemistry and Mechanical Engineering Departments to provide a state-of-the-art research facility for student and faculty use. Funding for the lab enables the two departments to introduce their students to an exciting new cross-disciplinary area. Faculty involved in the project are Professors
Ann Andersen, mechanical engineering; Mary Carroll, chemistry; Mike Hagerman, chemistry; and Rich Wilk, mechanical engineering.

Previous NSF-MRI awards have provided instrumentation for non-contact measurement, used in research by Professors Ron Bucinell and Bill Keat,
both in mechanical engineering, and a laser confocal microscope, awarded to Professors Quynh Chu-LaGraff, Barbara Boyer, Barbara Danowski, Steve Horton, and Rob Lauzon, all in biology, for use by them and their students.

Garnet and Gray: FYI — Professor Frederick Klemm honored

Posted on Sep 1, 2002

Frederick A. Klemm, Professor of
German Emeritus, was honored as the “Father of Terms Abroad at Union” at a recent on-campus gathering. President Roger Hull and Professor of French
Bill Thomas, director of international programs, presented a photograph of Professor Klemm that will hang in the International Programs Office in the Humanities Building.

President Hull commented that Fred and Eleanor Klemm have clearly touched the lives of many Union alumni. Stephen Ciesinski '70, chairman of the Union Board of Trustees and a member of the first term abroad at Union in Vienna, said in a letter to the Klemms, “Congratulations on being recognized for founding and architecting the Terms Abroad Program. We are all very grateful for your long-lasting devotion and inspiration in making this program one of the significant distinctions that Union offers its students.” James Ehlen '62 said, “You are one of the few people to have been favorably influential in my life. You remain the foremost faculty member in my memories of four very formative years of my development.”
