‘Imagine No Religion’ shown in Wikoff Gallery

 Imagine No Religion, a new student show featuring the photography of Frank Rapant '07, runs through March 22 at the Wikoff Gallery in the Nott Memorial. The project focuses on crimes against women in major world religions.      


    “I was amazed to discover the amount of abuse women are expected to take at the hands of ‘holy' men,” says Rapant in his artist's statement.


     Rapant is an English major and Visual Arts minor. He is also a full-time photolab technician in the Art Department.

Closing reception for ‘Armed’ is today

     A closing reception and panel discussion will be held today, Thursday, 4:30 p.m. in the Nott Memorial for “Armed: Contemporary Art and Violence.” The Daily Gazette recently called “Armed” one of the best Capital Region art shows of 2006. Featured artists on the panel include Robert Beck, Gregory Green, Michael Millspaugh, Michael Oatmen, David Rees and Margaret Roleke. The event is free and open to the public. “Armed” explores the human obsession with weapons and the complexities of aggression. The exhibit features sculpture, collage, photography, painting and drawing by 11 artists. It was curated by Nadine Wasserman and Mandevilel Gallery Director Rachel Seligman.

Prof. Burton reviews Department of State Web site

A review of the Department of State's “Travel” Web site (www.travel.state.gov) by Donna Burton, associate professor, Schaffer Library, was published in Government Information Quarterly 2006 (v.23, #3-4). The site contains information about international travel warnings, trip planning, passports and visas, and residing, studying or teaching abroad. Burton also was acknowledged as a contributor in the research and confirmation process in The Yale Book of Quotations, edited by Fred Shapiro (Yale University Press, 2006). In addition, she has contributed a review section on humor periodical publications (both print and online) for the 15th edition of Magazines for Libraries, a standard reference source published in 2006 by CSA, a worldwide information company, and edited by former Union Librarian Cheryl LaGuardia.

Prof. Gmelch updates books on baseball

Updated editions of two books by Professor of Anthropology George Gmelch, Inside Pitch: Life in Professional Baseball and In the Ballpark: The Working Lives of Baseball People (with JJ Weiner), have been published. Each book has a new chapter and a new publisher, University of Nebraska Press.
