Chester A. Arthur’s birth honored

This week the Albany Rural Cemetery honored one of Union's most renowned alumni – Chester A. Arthur, Class of 1848, the nation's 21st president – on the 176th anniversary of his birth. Brigadier General F. David Sheppard of the Division of Military and Naval Affairs in Latham presented a wreath from President Bush at Arthur's gravesite. Arthur was elected vice president under President James A. Garfield. After Garfield's death, he became president in September 1881 and served one term.

“The Terra Cotta Soldiers of Xian: Photographs by Sidney Gluck”

'Backs' – Sidney Gluck

A selection of images of the magnificent life-sized terra cotta soldiers and horses unearthed at Xian in the 1970s. The huge army was created by the First Emperor of China to immortalize the military might of the First Dynasty and serve the Emperor in his afterlife.

“The Political Body: Posters from the People's Republic of China in the 1960s and 1970s”


A striking collection of some 30 Chinese posters examining the relationships between the human body and the body politic during the 1960s and 1970s, from the Chinese Poster Collection of the University of Westminster, London. The images depict a range of styles and media, from realist oil painting and photographs to woodblock prints and cartoons. An exhibition reception and gallery talk is scheduled for Monday, Oct., 24 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Sharlet publishes chapter

Robert Sharlet, Chauncey Winters Research Professor of Political Science, recently published “In Search of the Rule of Law” as chapter 8 in Developments in Russian Politics edited by S. White, Z. Gitelman and R. Sakwa (Palgrave/Macmillan, 2005). His discussion focuses on the passage, implementation and continuing problems of post-Soviet criminal procedural legislation during President Vladimir Putin's first administration.
