Religious holidays noted

Following up on last week's notice about religious holidays this fall:


Some students may fast during Navaratra, which runs through Oct.12.


Ramadan, which began this week, ends on Nov. 3.  During this time


some students will be fasting from sun up to sun down, and some will return home to observe Eid on Nov. 3.


Yom Kippur starts at sundown on Wednesday, Oct. 12 and ends at sundown on Thursday, Oct. 13. The holiday involves both fasting and possible travel home.


Some students will return home on Nov. 1 to observe Diwali


Faculty members are encouraged to refrain from scheduling quizzes or exams during these holy days and to make appropriate arrangements for students to make up missed course work.

Hull Service Award nominees sought

Do you know a senior who is active in community service projects in the greater Schenectady community? He or she could be eligible to receive the first Roger H. Hull Community Service Award.


The award, named for the president of the College from 1990 to 2005, goes to the senior who has rendered the greatest sustained service (at least two years) to the local community. It is intended for those engaged in direct service, not fundraising or lobbying.

Disaster training set

The College is hosting disaster training from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. on two Saturdays, Oct. 8 and 15. The training will enable participants to volunteer at disaster sites such as New Orleans; some could also staff disaster relief sheltering on campus. For more information, contact John R. Japanese classical arts presented

Noted Tokyo dance master Michikaoru Hanayagi will offer workshops in classical Japanese theater and dance from Monday, Oct. 10 through Wednesday, Oct. 12. Sponsored by the Dance Program with a grant from the Freeman Foundation, the events are free and open to the public.


A lecture-demonstration in dance, from Noh to Kabuki traditions, will be presented on Monday from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Yulman Theater Actors Studio, and again on Tuesday, from 9:30 to 10:40 a.m. in the Dance Studio of the Arts Building.


On Wednesday, Hanayagi will give a lecture/demonstration on Kabuki make-up, wigs and costumes from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the Actors Studio.


A solo performance will be presented Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. in the Dance Studio.


“The enchantments of classical Japanese dance are as endless as the array of characters an interpreter can embody,” said Miryam Moutillet, director of the Dance Program.
