High Holy Days observances noted

Posted on Sep 30, 2005

The shofar, or ram’s horn, is a well-known symbol of the High Holy Days.

Faculty members are encouraged to make appropriate arrangements for students who are observing religious holidays this month to make up missed course work.

The first holy day of the fall term is Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, which begins at sundown on Monday, Oct. 3. Some students will go home to be with their families on the 3rd and return to class on Thursday, Oct. 6. Yom Kippur starts at sundown on Wednesday, Oct. 12, and ends at sundown on Thursday, Oct. 13, with some students leaving campus on the 12th and returning on Oct. 14. Faculty are asked to try not to schedule quizzes or exams during the High Holy Days.

“It is important that we as a College be responsive to those members of our community who observe these holy days, which are important to their lives and their identities,” said Therese A. McCarty, interim dean of faculty.
