Richard Steinwurtzel `72 on his pledge to support the restoration of the Schaffer Library: “As a Union student, and now as an attorney, I value the resources of an excellent library. Union is taking the right steps to renew its academic centerpiece. The library renovation and expansion plans are the right combination of technology, design, and study space. The facility will be vastly improved for use by Union students and faculty. I hope others will join me
in pledging to this important project.” Mr. Steinwurtzel is a partner with Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson in Washington, D.C. and New York City and has recently been appointed to the College's Trustee Board of Advisors.
The Lawrence J. Hollander Bicentennial Scholarship represents a special gift to Union from one of our own, Dean Emeritus Larry Hollander. Reflecting his life-time devotion to engineering education, Hollander created the scholarship in recognition of Union's Bicentennial and has continued his gifting to create an endowment of over $130,000 thus far.
After serving in World War II, Hollander graduated from New York University College of Engineering in 1961 benefitting from the G.I. Bill. He went on to a distinguished academic career including teaching positions at New York University, an appointment to the position of Secretary to the State Board of Examiners of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors (his signature can be found on thousands of New York EE. licences), Associate Dean at Cooper Union, followed by his 19861993 career at Union College.
During the last eighteen years Hollander has served as Director of Fellowships for the Tau Beta Pi Association (national engineering honor society), reviewing tens of thousands of applications for engineering fellowships. “It was during my years counseling students, that I developed a keen sense of the struggle these students had for the finances to complete their education,” Hollander said. He added, “I believe that through my scholarship, I will continue to assist engineering students well into the next century and beyond.”
The College extends special thanks to Larry Hollander for his contribution as a professor and his lasting gift to aid future Union students through his scholarship.
Long time Schenectady residents, Dr. Jonas Fleminberg `31 and his wife, Edith, have enjoyed many a stroll on the Union College Campus and are happy to be contributors to the Schaffer Library. They remember that in the days Jonas was a Union student and Edith attended State Teacher's College of NY (now SUNYA) the library was located in the Nott. Except for dental schooling in the early 30's and military service from 1940-1945, the Fleminbergs have lived in Schenectady and operated a dental practice here until the late 1970's.
In appreciation of their generous gift towards the remodeling of the Schaffer Library, a special plaque with the names of Dr. Jonas and Edith Fleminberg will be placed in the Phi Beta Kappa room in the renovated library.
