Mellon faculty grants available

Union's four-college Mellon faculty development grant provides stipends and travel expense reimbursement for faculty to give lectures and talk to classes at the four colleges (Colgate, Hamilton, Skidmore and Union). Mumbai flood relief donations sought

Eshi Motahar, associate professor of economics and chair of the coordinating committee for the College's India Faculty Exchange Program, will wrap up his flood relief fund-raising efforts for Mumbai (formerly Bombay), devastated by recent flooding, on Oct. 3. To contribute, send a check, made payable to Union College, to Motahar at SS216D. The exchange program involves a confederation of colleges affiliated with the University of Mumbai.

Submissions encouraged for research journal

Faculty members who have had a peer-reviewed research or scholarly publication with student co-authors in the past six months are encouraged to submit a description of the article for the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) Quarterly. Inclusion in the CUR journal helps increase the visibility of scholarly activity involving undergraduates. For guidelines and information, contact Mary K. Reminder: Grants deadline approaching

Oct. 14 is the deadline for proposals for the Internal Education Foundation (both student-initiated research proposals and “educationally innovative projects”), Faculty Research Fund and Humanities Development Fund.


Submit IEF student-initiated research proposals to the Director of Undergraduate research and educationally innovative proposals to the Dean of Arts & Sciences. Forms and guidelines for both are available in S100, Science & Engineering Building, or visit the Web at http://www.union.edu/Academics/AcademicAffairs.

Protestant ministry marks 25 years

The Campus Protestant Ministry will celebrate 25 years of service with a special worship service in Memorial Chapel at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 2. The service will feature the Union College Gospel Choir, Prof. Diane McMullen on organ, and seven area choirs led by Elizabeth McFarland, choir director at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Scotia. The Rev. Richard Spalding, chaplain at Williams College, will preach. “This will be a very exciting event,” says Rev. Viki Brooks-McDonald, campus Protestant minister. “We're celebrating our past and ensuring our future.”
