Mission Statement

As the number of vehicles and population increase, parking will be increasingly more difficult to find. Although Union College has a relatively small student body, there often are few open parking spots around campus. This problem is much worse when it comes to the parking lot at Reamer, possibly due to the number of parking spaces, its popularity, and convenient location. The goal of this senior project is to successfully design and implement an efficient and inexpensive system to monitor a parking lot, and provide information in a user-friendly way to help students find open parking spots.

The Internet of Things (IOT) is beginning to surround our everyday lives, and our ability to understand and control the things around us will become much easier. Companies around the world have already begun offering systems to monitor the weather, the temperature in a home or even a person’s heart rate.
The countless technologies emerging in today’s society have not only contributed to our everyday lives, but they have accelerated the IOT platform development. Systems used to monitor parking lot occupancy will also contribute to the IOT, and the services widely available will be beneficial to many users.
A system that successfully monitors parking lot occupancy will be beneficial to the Union College community, specifically benefiting the students on campus with vehicles. The service will provide students with the ability to easily monitor the four spaces at Reamer, and the ease of knowing space availability. This is not only benefitting students busy schedule by cutting down on parking time, but it will benefit their social lives as well.
