Mission Statement

As the number of vehicles and population increase, parking will be increasingly more difficult to find. Although Union College has a relatively small student body, there often are few open parking spots around campus. This problem is much worse when it comes to the parking lot at Reamer, possibly due to the number of parking spaces, its popularity, and convenient location. The goal of this senior project is to successfully design and implement an efficient and inexpensive system to monitor a parking lot, and provide information in a user-friendly way to help students find open parking spots....

Indoor Testing Results

An indoor miniature parking lot was implemented in order to easily test the system, which can be seen below in Figure 12. This indoor testing environment was built using tape to represent the parking spots, a table and box to hold the Raspberry Pi and camera in place over the spots, and two remote control cars representing vehicles parking. Throughout testing, the system was started and initialized so that each spot was empty. Once done, the remote controlled cars are parked at random times in different locations each time. The implemented software included some code used to record the...

Design Requirement Update

The parking monitoring system will allow users to monitor the availability of the parking spots in Reamer from their computer. This system is designed to be cheap and fast but accurate and convenient for students around campus looking to park in one of the four parking spaces available. Occupancy data will be sent to a website that then displays the relevant information in a user-friendly way. Potential users for this specific system would be constrained to Union College students and faculty. The proposed system will only monitor parking in the Reamer parking lot; however it should be built...
