Day and Night at Chautauqua: Works by Hilary Zelson

Day and Night at Chautauqua: Works by Hilary Zelson

This past summer I spent seven weeks at the Chautauqua School of Art, in the historic community known as the Chautauqua Institution in western New York. Upon arrival, I was immersed in a completely unfamiliar environment surrounded by unfamiliar faces. It was unsettling yet inspiring, so without much hesitation I threw myself into my work.

The curriculum for the study of mathematics – in particular the study of descriptive geometry – has changed drastically over the last century with the implementation of computer technology. What was once painstakingly illustrated with pencil and paper can now be generated instantaneously with the click of a mouse.

Unnatural Selection: Environmental Illustrations by Vasyl Hereha

Unnatural Selection: Environmental Illustrations by Vasyl Hereha

This exhibition of drawings by Vasyl Hereha explores contradictions in the natural world. In some cases animals are subjected to unnatural habitats and conditions due to the inventions of man – oil spills, melting glaciers, inbreeding, just to name a few. Hereha’s work looks critically at man’s impact on the environment, raising the question: what do we consider natural?

A Geometric Mind: Work by Emily Burgess and Alex Handin

A Geometric Mind: Work by Emily Burgess and Alex Handin

Abstract art often relies on geometry to create complex emotional experiences. In order to capture music visually, these photographs rely on geometric perspectives to suggest the presence of an audience. Each photograph conveys the intimate performer-listener relationship through geometric abstractions of subject and atmosphere.

The Illuminated Pixel

The Illuminated Pixel

The artwork in this exhibition represents the final projects from the courses Intro to Digital Art and 3D Computer Modeling. Though they differ in approach they share a common thread, using the pixel as the primary method to generate images. Intro to Digital Art focuses on the pixel like the painter does, with pigment on canvas.

Creatures in Stone and Steel: Sculpture and Drawing by Claire Hendry Foster

Creatures in Stone and Steel: Sculpture and Drawing by Claire Hendry Foster

Creating sculptures is a way to make the images and creatures of my imagination into a reality. I desire to create objects of beauty and interest, to capture the imaginative and fantastic in a tangible, visual object. Wood, stone, steel, and clay all have unique properties and potentials. In the process of discovering these potentials – learning to work with the materials and shaping them into pieces – my experimentation allows the original beauty of the materials to come through.

A Perfect Press: Prints by Union Students

A Perfect Press: Prints by Union Students

The prints in this exhibition were created in the Printmaking: Etching class taught by Prof. Sandy Wimer in Spring term of 2009. The prints employ a variety of techniques such as: etching, aquatint, soft-ground, pigmented inkjet, and polymer photogravure printing. Many of the final prints combine several different techniques to create a single image.
