With the warming spring, fish became more active in a local lake so they were the focus of our last unit. Students waded in the lake with a large seine and collected a variety of fish species. After a lecture on fish anatomy, swimming dynamics, coloration, and feeding behavior, students selected a specimen to draw. The fish required the most acute observation skills as well as precise drawing technique. For instance scale counts on the drawings had to conform to the number on the species drawn. After their ink drawings were complete, Prof. Sandy Wimer guided the students through the process of making prints of their drawings.
