Website vs. Blog

All blogs are websites, but not all websites are blogs.

What we think of as a website is a collection of static content called web pages, and the pages are not normally organized by date. Editing the overall layout and design is a little easier than managing the layout of a blog because you have more editing capabilities, especially if you know HTML coding.

Blog is short for “Web Log”. A blog is a dynamic website that is frequently updated. That makes sense considering they were originally created for personal journaling. It’s a series of content called “posts” that must be organized by category, and are usually presented in reverse chronological order so you’ll see the most recent post first.

Categories help you to arrange your posts, and to help viewers search through your posts for content. Posts must be in a category, and can be assigned into more that one category. As an examnple, many academic departments have all of their instructors in a cateogry called Faculty, but they may also be listed in Current Faculty.

Using a blog format is good when you have information that needs updated on a consistent basis, i.e., upcoming concerts or speakers. What you normally see is a list of entries on an Index Page, with each entry having a short excerpt of the text, and a button to click to read more.
